Ghazipur: A major scam linked to the power department has surfaced in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district, raising serious concerns over administrative functioning and the transparency of the monitoring system. Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Pramod Yadav, posted at the sub-division office in Para under Electricity Distribution Division-I, Jangipur, has come under the scanner for alleged involvement in the theft of nine transformers. As the investigation progresses, indications of an organized network behind the crime are emerging.

Nine Transformers Vanish, System in Shock

The case came to light following an FIR registered at Nandganj police station a few days ago regarding transformer theft. Acting swiftly on the complaint, police detained two contractual employees for questioning. During interrogation, crucial leads were obtained, resulting in the recovery of three stolen transformers. This recovery significantly escalated the seriousness of the case and strengthened suspicions of internal collusion within the department.

During the course of the investigation, it became evident that the case might not be limited to lower-level staff alone. The role of senior officials has also come under scrutiny. A probe conducted at the zonal level indicated that SDO Pramod Yadav’s involvement could not be ruled out. Notably, nine transformers reportedly went missing during his tenure, a figure that suggests the possibility of coordinated activity rather than isolated incidents. This has put the department’s accountability and supervisory mechanisms under serious question.

Contract Workers Arrested, Bigger Names Emerge

Two contractual linemen—Ramesh Ram and Shivkumar—have been identified as directly involved in the case. Both have been dismissed from service with immediate effect. Sources indicate that the recovery of stolen transformers was made possible based on their disclosures, helping investigators piece together the chain of events. It is believed that these workers played an active role in executing the thefts.

SDO Under Scanner as Collusion Angle Grows

According to available information, the disappearance of transformers had already been reported at the departmental level earlier. The then Junior Engineer had informed senior officials and also submitted a written complaint to the police. Despite this, no substantial action was taken for a considerable period, raising concerns about negligence and possible complicity within the system. Questions are now being raised as to why such a significant issue was not addressed promptly.

The matter gained further traction when Energy Minister A.K. Sharma visited Ghazipur recently and conducted a surprise inspection of the Mahraur substation. Several technical and administrative irregularities were detected during the inspection, leading to the suspension of the concerned Junior Engineer. During the same visit, the transformer theft issue also came to the minister’s notice, following which the pace of the investigation was accelerated.

Inspection Triggered, Pressure Mounts

Complaints regarding the matter were also made at the district administration level, prompting a coordinated probe involving both administrative and departmental authorities. Based on the findings so far, a detailed report has been forwarded to higher management for further action against SDO Pramod Yadav. Sources suggest that more revelations could emerge in the coming days as the investigation deepens.

This case goes beyond a simple theft incident and highlights deeper systemic issues within the department. It underscores how weak monitoring and lack of accountability can lead to large-scale misuse of government resources. As of now, the investigation is ongoing, and strict action against those found guilty is expected in the near future.
