Gorakhpur/Chiluatal: A shocking interstate fraud racket has been exposed in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur, where a criminal gang allegedly trapped people under the pretext of marriage, conducted fake wedding rituals, and later impersonated police officials to hold victims hostage and extort money. Police in the Chiluatal area have arrested seven members of the gang, while the main “fake bride” and one accomplice woman remain absconding.

A Dream Match Turned Into a Carefully Scripted Extortion Ambush

The case is linked to a family from Kota, Rajasthan, who were invited to Gorakhpur on the assurance of a fixed marriage alliance. They were told that the match had already been finalized and only formal rituals were to be performed. Trusting this, the family arrived in Gorakhpur on March 12, unaware that a detailed conspiracy had already been laid out.

Investigations revealed that the gang had заранее arranged a fake bride, impersonated relatives, and created a complete wedding setup. To avoid suspicion, even a proper garland exchange ceremony (jaimala) was conducted, making the event appear legitimate. However, immediately after the rituals, the situation took a sudden turn.

Fake Bride, Fake Relatives, & Fake Police

It is alleged that the accused arrived dressed in fake police uniforms and displayed forged identity cards. They surrounded the family and claimed that an illegal marriage had been conducted. Under this intimidation, the victims were threatened with legal action and detention. The family was then held hostage and pressured to pay ₹3 lakh.

Fearing arrest and humiliation, the victim family arranged the demanded money and handed it over to the accused. Soon after receiving the cash, all members of the gang fled the scene.

Mastermind With Criminal Past Record

Following the incident, a zero FIR was registered in Rajasthan, which was later transferred to Gorakhpur police. Based on technical surveillance, mobile tracking, and intelligence inputs, police conducted a raid in the Chiluatal area and arrested seven accused.

The arrested individuals have been identified as gang leader Ankush Singh, along with Raju Sharma, Dhirendra Yadav alias Tuntun, Ravi Chaudhary, Munna Jaiswal, Navmi Sharma, and Shaila Devi.

Police records show that Ankush Singh is a known history-sheeter with multiple serious criminal cases already registered against him, including attempted murder, robbery, Arms Act violations, and organised crime charges. Investigators believe he was the mastermind behind the entire operation.

According to officials, Ankush Singh posed as a police sub-inspector and controlled the entire fraud setup, while other members acted as constables and officers to intimidate victims. Fake uniforms, forged IDs, and coordinated role-playing formed the backbone of the gang’s execution strategy.

During interrogation, it also emerged that the fake bride and another woman were pre-trained for the operation and presented as relatives to make the wedding appear authentic. Once the marriage rituals were completed, the environment was deliberately turned hostile to create fear and pressure.

Police have recovered ₹1.66 lakh in cash, two fake police identity cards, and several suspicious documents from the accused. Authorities are now investigating other members of the network and identifying additional possible victims.

Experts describe such cases as classic examples of social engineering and emotional manipulation, where criminals exploit trust and societal rituals like marriage to execute fraud under controlled psychological pressure.

All seven arrested accused have been sent to jail after being produced before the court, while efforts continue to trace the absconding members. Police have indicated that further revelations are likely as the investigation progresses.
