Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad police have registered an FIR in connection with a cyber fraud case involving an 83-year-old retired doctor from Anandnagar, who reportedly lost nearly ₹1 lakh from his bank account. The complainant stated that he did not share any OTP, password, or banking credentials with anyone, yet a substantial amount was withdrawn from his account. The FIR was filed nearly two months after the incident.
According to the complaint, the fraud took place on January 2, when the doctor attempted a routine transaction through a digital payment application. He received a notification claiming that his daily transaction limit had been exceeded, despite having conducted no prior transactions that day. Concerned by the unusual message, he visited his bank branch a few days later for clarification.

Bank officials confirmed that an online transaction of ₹99,000 had been carried out from his account in the early hours of January 2. The complainant maintained that he had neither initiated the transfer nor shared any sensitive banking information with anyone.
Upon discovering the unauthorized transaction, the doctor immediately contacted the National Cyber Crime Helpline (1930). Despite this prompt action, the FIR was formally registered only after a delay of nearly two months.
Police officials stated that the FIR has been filed under the relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) pertaining to theft, along with applicable sections of the Information Technology Act. Investigators are examining digital evidence to trace and identify the culprits.
Experts say this incident highlights that cyber fraud increasingly targets elderly citizens. Earlier reports include a case in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, where a 90-year-old retired Air Force doctor was allegedly defrauded of approximately ₹2.5 crore. In that case, the victim was reportedly kept under “digital arrest” for around 25 days while his bank account was compromised.
Cybersecurity specialists have issued warnings urging senior citizens to exercise extreme caution when conducting online transactions. They emphasize vigilance against suspicious messages, links, or calls, and advise using only verified digital platforms for financial transactions.
In Ahmedabad’s case, it was noted that cybercriminals can use both technical and psychological tactics to siphon off large sums of money. Officials confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and a detailed analysis of the digital trail is being conducted to identify the perpetrators.
This incident serves as a clear warning to citizens and investors that caution is essential in all online financial dealings.
