Mumbai:     Music composer and filmmaker Palash Muchhal on Tuesday appeared before an Andheri court in connection with a ₹10-crore defamation suit filed against Marathi actor-producer Vidnyan Mane, marking a legal escalation in a controversy involving allegations of financial fraud and personal misconduct.

The defamation case follows claims made by Mane, who had accused Muchhal of cheating him of ₹40 lakh and also made statements related to the composer’s private life. Muchhal has strongly denied all allegations, calling them false, baseless and motivated, and has asserted that the claims have caused serious harm to his reputation in both personal and professional spheres.

Muchhal arrived at the court along with his lawyer Shreyansh Mitare, as proceedings formally commenced in the matter.

‘Deliberate attempt to malign image,’ claims Muchhal

According to the petition filed by Muchhal, Mane allegedly made defamatory remarks through media interviews and social media platforms with the intent of damaging his public image. The plea states that the accusations were not supported by facts and were aimed at creating suspicion around Muchhal’s character and credibility.

Earlier, Muchhal had disclosed that a legal notice seeking ₹10 crore in damages was issued to Mane. The notice alleges that Mane knowingly circulated false, offensive and defamatory statements, causing reputational loss and mental distress.

Muchhal has maintained that the accusations were part of a targeted attempt to tarnish his standing in the entertainment industry.

Personal life dragged into public domain

The dispute did not remain confined to financial allegations. Mane had also made claims relating to Muchhal’s personal life, including references to his past relationship with Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana. Mane alleged misconduct during the course of that relationship.

Muchhal has categorically denied these assertions as well, stating that his personal life has been unfairly dragged into a public controversy. He has argued that such statements are not only untrue but also amount to an invasion of privacy and defamation under the law.

Vidnyan Mane responds to defamation notice

Responding to the defamation notice, Mane has stated that he is not intimidated by the legal action and stands by his claims. He has said that the notice included references to several media reports quoting his statements.

Mane has asserted that he will present his version of events before the court and is confident of defending his position through legal means.

How the dispute began

According to Mane, who works as a film financier, he came in contact with Muchhal through a common acquaintance during a visit related to film projects. Mane has alleged that he invested money in good faith, which was later not returned.

Muchhal, however, has rejected this narrative, saying the claims are being misrepresented and that the facts are being selectively presented to create a false impression. He has insisted that the matter is being used to exert pressure and generate negative publicity.

Case now before the court

With both sides maintaining their positions, the dispute has now moved fully into the judicial domain. While Muchhal is seeking damages for alleged defamation and reputational harm, Mane continues to press his allegations of financial wrongdoing.

The court is expected to examine the submissions made by both parties in the coming hearings. The outcome of the proceedings will determine the future course of this high-profile legal battle that has attracted significant attention within the entertainment industry.
