Uttar Pradesh DGP Rajeev Krishna and Principal Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad on Monday announced that a state-level Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by an IG-rank officer, will investigate the alleged toxic cough syrup case reported from different parts of the state. Officials clarified that no death has been confirmed so far due to consumption of the syrup, but an extensive inquiry has been launched given the seriousness of the inputs received.

DGP Outlines Scope of SIT Inquiry

DGP Rajeev Krishna said the SIT is being constituted to ensure a coordinated and accelerated investigation. The team will examine affected districts, involved firms, and supply networks in detail. He added that police have received several crucial leads in the matter, and verification of those inputs is underway.

Large-Scale Action Against Drug Networks

According to officials, the crackdown on drug cartels has resulted in 128 FIRs registered so far. Several stockists are under suspicion for selling cough syrup illegally and violating regulatory norms. Of the five named accused, three have been arrested while two others are currently absconding.

Preliminary findings indicate that certain stockists were distributing the syrup illegally, and the supply chain may extend beyond Uttar Pradesh. Authorities said there are inputs suggesting that consignments of the syrup may have been sold in Bangladesh and Nepal. Verification of these cross-border links is in progress.

Financial Trail and Company Records Under Scrutiny

Principal Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad said firms and individuals under investigation are being examined for irregular financial transactions. The financial trail is being traced to determine whether large-scale illegal trade was underway. Officials stated that any negligence or complicity will attract strict action.

Extradition Steps for Accused Who Fled Abroad

Police said two of the accused have fled abroad, reportedly to Dubai. The DGP said the process of extradition will be initiated to bring them back to face investigation. He emphasised that no accused will be spared and the probe will be conducted with full transparency.
