New Delhi | December 7, 2025 India’s largest private carrier, IndiGo, is grappling with one of the worst operational meltdowns in its two-decade history.
Over the past week, thousands of flights have been abruptly cancelled, leaving passengers across major cities stranded and frustrated.
The situation has prompted India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), to intervene and issue a show-cause notice to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers, demanding an explanation within 24 hours.
Regulator Steps In: “Failure to Ensure Reliable Operations”
In its notice, DGCA said IndiGo had “failed to ensure reliable and timely flight operations,” violating passenger rights and operational norms.
The regulator accused the airline of cancelling flights without sufficient notice, triggering a chain reaction of fare hikes across the aviation market.
Following the disruption, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) moved swiftly to impose temporary fare caps to protect passengers from predatory pricing.
Under the new ceiling, one-way fares for routes up to 500 km have been capped at ₹7,500, while flights between 1,000–1,500 km cannot exceed ₹15,000.
Root Cause: Pilot Duty Rule Change Cripples Scheduling
IndiGo attributed the unprecedented cancellations to new pilot duty-hour regulations introduced under the Fatigue Management System (FMS).
The revised rules limit flying hours and mandate longer rest periods, forcing airlines to restructure rosters and reduce flight frequency during the transition period.
A company spokesperson stated “Our teams are recalibrating operations in line with the new safety guidelines. This disruption is temporary, and normal schedules should resume between December 10 and 15.”
However, industry observers believe IndiGo’s reliance on tight crew utilization and aggressive turnaround times has made it especially vulnerable to such regulatory shocks.
Mass Cancellations Leave Passengers Stranded Nationwide
On Friday alone, over 1,000 IndiGo flights were grounded, and by Saturday, disruptions persisted.
Key airports such as Delhi (86 cancellations), Mumbai (109), Bengaluru (124), and Hyderabad (66) reported large-scale cancellations.
Many passengers received cancellation alerts at the last minute, sparking chaos at airport terminals.
In response, Delhi Airport Authority stated, “Operations are gradually stabilizing, though sector-wise cancellations continue.”
Government Response: Relief, Oversight, and Accountability
The government has taken a two-pronged approach — immediate relief for passengers and strict oversight of airline operations.
To alleviate congestion and fare spikes, the Railways has introduced additional trains on key routes.
Meanwhile, MoCA confirmed that it would monitor ticket prices and flight data in real time to prevent market manipulation.
A senior official remarked, “The aviation ecosystem cannot rely on commercial convenience alone. Public trust is equally important.”
Safety Concerns Spark Pilot Union Protest
Pilot associations have raised concerns over the temporary exemptions granted to IndiGo.
They argue that safety norms should not be compromised for operational convenience.
“Regulations exist for passenger and crew safety — not for corporate relief,” said a senior pilot union leader. “Exemptions set a dangerous precedent. If rules bend once, they’ll bend again.”
Analysts Call It IndiGo’s “Biggest Stress Test” in 20 Years
Aviation analysts describe the crisis as IndiGo’s biggest test since its inception.
Once celebrated for punctuality and precision, the airline now faces an erosion of passenger confidence and reputational risk.
Experts suggest that IndiGo must rethink its manpower strategy and route optimization model, especially as competition intensifies and public scrutiny grows.
