Former fiancée accused of morphing photos, sharing them with relatives; FIR registered as police probe cyber harassment angle

Sahibabad – In a disturbing case of digital retaliation, a woman from Delhi allegedly created a fake Instagram account to defame her former fiancé after their engagement fell apart. The woman is accused of morphing the man’s photographs into obscene visuals, adding his mobile number, and circulating the content widely across social media. The victim’s family claims the material was deliberately sent to relatives and neighbours to inflict mental harassment and reputational harm.

The victim’s sister lodged a complaint at Sahibabad police station, following which the police have registered an FIR and initiated a detailed inquiry into the cyber harassment allegations.

Harassment Began After Engagement Collapsed; Family Alleges ‘Planned Revenge Campaign’

According to the FIR, the engagement between the Sahibabad-based youth and the Delhi resident was formalised a year ago but broke down soon after due to personal disagreements between the families. Following the breakup, the accused allegedly arrived at the victim’s home with her family members and engaged in heated arguments and verbal abuse. The engagement gifts were returned during the confrontation.

The complainant states that what followed was a systematic and escalating campaign of revenge:

  • The accused allegedly sent abusive and threatening messages to the youth and his sister on Instagram.
  • She then reportedly morphed and edited the youth’s photographs, transforming them into obscene images.
  • These altered photos were reportedly circulated along with the youth’s mobile number, resulting in unsolicited calls and harassment.
  • The content was also forwarded to relatives, acquaintances and neighbours, amplifying the reputational damage.
  • Multiple social media platforms—not just Instagram—were allegedly used to spread the edited images.

The victim’s family says the issue soon escalated beyond a personal dispute, evolving into continuous cyberbullying that deeply affected them emotionally.

Family Claims Severe Mental Distress: “This Was Deliberate, Targeted, Meant to Humiliate Us”

In her statement, the victim’s sister said:

“Our household environment deteriorated completely. Relatives developed misunderstandings, and neighbours began asking uncomfortable questions. Everything was orchestrated to defame us and create pressure. We had no option left but to approach the police.”

The family maintains that the repeated circulation of obscene content, especially among known acquaintances, caused significant mental agony and social embarrassment.

Police Probe Underway: Fake ID, Edited Photos and Digital Trail Under Examination

Confirming the registration of the case, ACP Sahibabad said:

“An FIR has been registered. We are investigating all aspects, including the creation of the fake Instagram profile, the edited material, and the spread of obscene content. Cyber-related evidence is being examined. Further action will be taken based on findings.”

The police are analysing the accused’s phone data, social media activity, metadata of the edited images, and the origin of the fake account. Cyber Cell assistance will be roped in if required.

Digital Revenge on the Rise: Experts Flag Growing Misuse of Social Media Post-Relationship Disputes

Cyber experts note that the misuse of social media platforms for retaliation—particularly after failed relationships, disputes or breakups—is on the rise. Actions such as creating fake accounts, morphing photos, sending explicit images, and issuing threats fall under cyberstalking, identity misuse, and online harassment, all of which are criminal offences under Indian law.

Police Assures Strict Action After Evidence Review

With the investigation underway, police have assured the family that strict action will follow once technical evidence is consolidated. The family hopes that a firm response will deter similar misuse of social platforms in future and set an example against digital defamation.
