The UAE’s Cyber Security Council has revealed that more than 12,000 breaches have occurred across Wi-Fi networks in the country since the beginning of 2025. The figure represents nearly 35 per cent of all reported cyberattacks this year, underscoring the increasing risks posed by unsecured and untrusted networks.
Officials said hackers and intruders are exploiting public and home Wi-Fi networks to infiltrate users’ systems. These breaches often target individuals who unknowingly connect to compromised networks, making them vulnerable to data theft, financial fraud, and spyware infiltration.

Threat of Man-in-the-Middle Attacks
Cyber experts highlighted that the primary risk comes from “man-in-the-middle” attacks. In such cases, hackers intercept and monitor data transmissions between users and online platforms. This allows intruders to read sensitive information, steal login credentials, redirect users to fraudulent websites, and even record phone calls. Security professionals also warned that spyware and malicious software can be installed on personal devices without the user’s knowledge, leaving long-term vulnerabilities that may compromise both personal and financial security.
The UAE Cyber Security Council emphasized that the rise in such incidents reflects how hackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in exploiting everyday internet usage.
National Push for Safer Digital Ecosystem
Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, Chairman of the UAE Cyber Security Council, stated that the country is accelerating its efforts to safeguard cyberspace. He described this as part of a broader national vision to strengthen trust in digital systems while raising awareness of safe online practices.
To minimize exposure to cyber threats, the council advised users to follow three key steps:
- Use a trusted VPN application to encrypt online connections.
- Activate the “safe browsing” feature on web browsers to block suspicious websites.
- Avoid accessing sensitive accounts, such as online banking or email, over open Wi-Fi networks.
Authorities added that public awareness is essential to reducing the scale of attacks. They reaffirmed the government’s commitment to introducing stronger protective measures, improving digital infrastructure, and collaborating with global partners to address emerging cyber challenges.
