Two alleged cyber criminals were arrested in Assam’s Nagaon district following a targeted police operation that uncovered an organized financial fraud racket involving approximately 15 crore rupees drained from accounts across multiple states. Acting on intelligence inputs regarding fraudulent digital transactions targeting unsuspecting individuals, police carried out a late-night raid on Monday in the Katimari area on the outskirts of Nagaon town. The suspects, identified as Afzal Hussain and Rashidul Haque, both residents of Chhoto Rupahi under Nagaon Sadar police station limits, were taken into custody after initial findings pointed to their direct role in routing siphoned money through an extensive network of bank accounts.
Large Cache of Banking Documents and Communication Devices Recovered
During the search operation, law enforcement personnel seized a significant quantity of financial instruments and digital hardware used to facilitate unauthorized money transfers. The seized cache included 22 ATM cards, 19 PAN cards, four bank checkbooks, 10 mobile phones, and 50 SIM cards registered under various names. Police suspect that the presence of multiple financial profiles points to a structured syndicate operating money-routing mechanisms. Forensic specialists and investigators are presently auditing the devices, call detail records, and banking credentials to identify the account holders and ascertain whether the cards were procured through commissions, deception, or compromised identities.
Cross-State Withdrawals Totaling Fifteen Crore Rupees Under Scrutiny
Available police findings indicate that the network withdrew around 15 crore rupees from various bank accounts located outside Assam. While official details regarding the specific states targeted, the exact number of victims, and the final destinations of the siphoned capital are being verified, authorities believe the seized materials were central to executing the transactions. Investigators are scrutinizing the financial ledgers associated with each debit card and checkbook to establish how the funds were distributed. Call records from the 50 recovered SIM cards are also expected to provide leads on associates handling withdrawal logistics in other regions.
Crackdown Intensifies Across Emerging Cybercrime Hubs in Central Assam
The latest arrests reflect an expanded enforcement drive in Nagaon and neighboring Morigaon, two central Assam districts increasingly identified by authorities as operational centers for coordinated cybercrime networks. Recent police operations in the Lahorighat and Moirabari pockets of Morigaon led to multiple detentions of suspected operatives, establishing a pattern of layered money movements across district boundaries. Regional police teams are widening their inquiries beyond the arrested pair to trace individuals who facilitated mule accounts, supplied bulk telecommunication lines, or assisted in cash withdrawals. The two suspects remain in custody as investigators work to determine their specific roles in the broader 15 crore rupee fraud operation.
