Authorities in Assam have confiscated immovable property linked to a high-value cyber fraud case, implicating Shoriful Islam, a resident of Moirabari in Morigaon district. The accused allegedly duped a businessman of ₹1.24 crore through an elaborate phishing scam.
Seizure Linked to Financial Fraud Investigation in Morigaon
Officials from the Morigaon district administration confirmed that land valued at ₹2.21 lakh was seized under legal provisions, including those from the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The confiscated land, located in Dhingbari Gaon under Moirabari Revenue Circle, is suspected to have been purchased using the illicit proceeds of the scam.
The investigation was initiated after a complaint was lodged by a businessman from Jagiroad, who claimed that he had been tricked into transferring money after receiving fraudulent communications posing as financial institution representatives. The accused reportedly sent fake documents and phishing links to convince the victim of the legitimacy of the transactions.

Accused Allegedly Defrauded Victim Using Phishing Tactics
Shoriful Islam is currently in custody and facing multiple charges. Police are probing his connections to any larger digital fraud syndicates. Morigaon Superintendent of Police Shafiur Rahman stated that such enforcement action serves as a warning to others using cybercrime for financial gain.
“This is a significant step towards ensuring digital accountability and protecting innocent citizens from sophisticated online scams,” Rahman noted.
The confiscation of the land is one of the first instances in Assam where immovable assets have been seized in connection with a cyber fraud case. It reflects the growing seriousness with which digital financial crimes are now being treated by authorities, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas.
As online frauds continue to rise, especially through phishing and impersonation methods, the Assam police are urging the public to stay alert and report any suspicious digital communication. The state’s cybercrime portal has also been updated for easier victim access.
