CHANDIGARH:  What began as a celebration of whimsical digital art inspired by Studio Ghibli has now turned into a cyber nightmare for unsuspecting fans. Amid the growing popularity of Ghibli-style artwork and merchandise, the Chandigarh Police Cyber Cell has issued a public advisory, warning residents about an alarming surge in cyber frauds capitalizing on this trend.

According to the advisory, cybercriminals are exploiting the booming interest in Ghibli-themed content by setting up fake online stores, claiming to sell exclusive merchandise and fan-made art. These websites often lure victims with attractive offers but end up stealing personal and financial information, delivering counterfeit goods—or disappearing altogether post-payment.

But the scam doesn’t stop there.

Phishing emails disguised as official Studio Ghibli promotions, giveaways, or event invites are being sent out in large numbers.

These emails often contain malicious links that redirect users to clone websites or trigger harmful downloads, leading to identity theft, device infections, or unauthorized access to sensitive data.

Even more concerning is the rise of ransomware and spyware hidden within “free” digital Ghibli content—such as wallpapers, screensavers, or animation packs. “Once downloaded, these files can lock devices, access browser data, or even spy on users’ personal files,” an official from the Cyber Cell explained.

Another disturbing trend highlighted in the advisory is the emergence of fake artist profiles on social media. These impersonators pretend to be popular Ghibli fan artists, deceiving followers into paying for fake commissions or extracting private details under false pretenses.
