Ahmedabad– In a landmark legal development, courts in Amreli, Vadodara, and Rajkot have sentenced seven individuals to life imprisonment under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in a single day. The verdicts mark a significant step in Gujarat’s ongoing crackdown on crimes against women and children.
Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi revealed that Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has issued strict directives to state officials, emphasizing the need for swift and stringent action against sexual offenses. The government has also stressed the importance of thorough police investigations and the collection of strong forensic and technical evidence to ensure maximum punishment for perpetrators.
Speedy Trials and Stringent Sentences
On February 25, the courts in the three districts delivered seven key verdicts, ensuring justice for seven victims. The accused, all convicted of raping minors, were sentenced to life imprisonment following comprehensive investigations and strong prosecution arguments backed by forensic evidence.

In Amreli district, charge sheets were filed within 17 days in two cases, and in the third, the accused was arrested on the same day as the crime. Similarly, in Rajkot city, charge sheets were filed within 40 days, while Rajkot rural police acted swiftly to apprehend suspects and expedite trials.
Government’s Commitment to Justice
Minister Sanghavi commended the police for their efficiency, stating that such prompt legal actions serve as a deterrent to future offenders. He assured that Gujarat’s zero-tolerance policy against crimes targeting women and children would continue with full force.
Over the past three years, Gujarat’s courts have adjudicated 947 POCSO cases, resulting in 574 life sentences and 11 death penalties. The latest verdicts reaffirm the state’s commitment to ensuring justice and protecting vulnerable sections of society.
