Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government has appointed senior IPS officer Arundev Gautam as the new Director General of Police (DGP), replacing Ashok Juneja. Juneja’s six-month extension concludes today, following which Gautam will officially take charge of the state’s police force.
A Seasoned Officer with Extensive Experience
Arundev Gautam, a 1992-batch IPS officer, has served in various capacities across Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. He began his career as Additional SP in Bhopal and later served as SP in Rajgarh. Following the formation of Chhattisgarh in 2000, his cadre was transferred to the new state. In Chhattisgarh, he has held the position of Superintendent of Police (SP) in six districts and served as Inspector General (IG) of two ranges. Additionally, his tenure as Home Secretary has provided him with deep insights into the workings of the state administration.
Known for his balanced approach, Gautam is regarded as a simple and approachable officer but maintains a strict stance on policing. His leadership skills have been evident throughout his service, including his tenure as CSP, ASP, and SP.

Early Career and Background
Born on July 2, 1967, Arundev Gautam hails from Abhaypur village in Fatehpur district, Uttar Pradesh. Coming from a farming background, he pursued his early education in his village before moving to Prayagraj for further studies. He completed his 10th and 12th from Government Inter College, Allahabad, and went on to earn a BA in Arts and an MA in Political Science from Allahabad University. Inspired by peers who cleared the UPSC exams, he decided to pursue a career in civil services. He later joined Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where he earned an MPhil in International Law and started a PhD before cracking the UPSC exam in his second attempt.
Key Assignments and Achievements
Gautam’s policing career began as a trainee IPS officer in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, followed by postings in Bilaspur as CSP and later as SDOP Kawardha and Additional SP Bhopal. He also served as Commandant of the 23rd Battalion of Madhya Pradesh Police.
After opting for the Chhattisgarh cadre, he took charge as SP in six districts—Korea, Raigarh, Jashpur, Rajnandgaon, Surguja, and Bilaspur. His leadership was particularly tested in 2009 when 29 police personnel, including the Superintendent of Police, were martyred in a Naxalite attack in Rajnandgaon. Gautam was then sent to the district to lead the counter-Naxal operations.
As an IG, he held key positions in the Chhattisgarh Armed Force, Bilaspur Range, and Bastar. Following the 2013 Jheeram Ghati Naxal attack, where several Congress leaders were killed, he was appointed IG Bastar and played a crucial role in ensuring peaceful elections later that year.
Administrative Roles and DGP Appointment
Gautam has also served as IG for railway, traffic, training, and recruitment branches, along with holding the post of Home Secretary for a significant period. His diverse experience in both operational and administrative roles makes him a strong choice for leading the Chhattisgarh Police.
With his appointment as DGP, Arundev Gautam is expected to bring his extensive experience and strategic leadership to further strengthen law enforcement and security in the state.
A letter from our Mentor :
Remembering a Dear Friend
He is my close friend, and we shared many memories during our UPSC preparation days. We stayed in the Diamond Jubilee Hostel of Allahabad University, and I often visited him at the JNU Hostel, where he lived, to discuss various topics.
Later, when I was Jailor in Indore, he came to stay with me at my jail campus house to appear for the MPPSC exam. My mother, always caring, cooked his favorite meals to make him feel at home. Soon after, he cleared the UPSC exam and became an IPS officer. Again after becoming an IPS, he came to the jail campus to meet us.
He has always been a kind and humble person, carrying himself with grace and integrity. Today, as he takes on the prestigious role of DGP of Chhattisgarh, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for his new journey.
