Rs 1,116 Crore Lost to Cyber Scams in Tamil Nadu Between January and September: Report
TAMIL NADU : Cyber financial frauds in Tamil Nadu have led to significant losses of Rs 1,116 crore between January and September 2024, according to data from the state’s cyber crime police. This concerning figure underscores the escalating threat of cybercrime in the region and highlights the pressing need for greater public awareness and swift reporting of incidents.
In their efforts to curb these losses, the cyber crime wing successfully froze Rs 526 crore through both automated and manual interventions. Furthermore, they recovered Rs 48 crore, which has since been returned to the victims of these fraudulent activities. These figures reflect a wider national trend, as the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal documented a total of 91,161 complaints during this period.

Common types of financial fraud identified by the authorities include phishing schemes, KYC (Know Your Customer) fraud, and other forms of digital scams. The cybercrime wing emphasized the importance of timely reporting, noting that swift action can significantly improve the chances of recovering stolen funds. “Delays in reporting may diminish the likelihood of a successful recovery,” a representative from the Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing warned, urging victims to report incidents immediately.
