The Varanasi Police thwarted an attempt to hack the Radio Operator Exam and arrested the mastermind behind it

VARANASI: On September 1, 2024, four individuals, including the mastermind behind a cybercrime operation, were arrested for leaking the question paper of the Uttar Pradesh Police Radio Operator Recruitment Exam. The incident occurred during the examination on February 1, 2024, at the Karan Institute of Technology, Varanasi, where it was reported that the computers used for the exam were being hacked. The case was initially registered under sections of the IT Act and the Uttar Pradesh Public Examination Act.

Modus Operandi: The cybercriminals collaborated with candidates to hack into computers during the examination. They charged significant sums to provide access to the exam paper through remote means. Before the exam, the hackers disabled the computers’ bootable mode and installed remote access software like AnyDesk, allowing them to control the computers from outside. On the exam day, they used the IP address to take control and solve the paper remotely.

Arrest and seizure: The police arrested four individuals in connection with the crime: Umesh Kumar Bhargav, Himanshu Tripathi, and Ajay Kumar Maurya, the mastermind.

The police also seized three Android mobile phones and one iOS Apple mobile phone.

The operation was directed by Police Commissioner Mohit Aggarwal and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Mod Kumar, and the investigation was led by Senior Inspector Vijay Narayan Mishra of the Cyber Crime Police Station, Varanasi Commissionerate.
