ADG Raid Reveals Rs 1.5 Crore Monthly Extortion by Narahi Police Station in Ballia, UP from Truck Operators; Police Officials and Brokers Arrested

In a significant operation led by ADG Varanasi and DIG Azamgarh, authorities have taken stringent action against illegal extortion activities at the UP-Bihar border. Acting on complaints of unlawful ‘extortion’ from vehicles, a raid was conducted at Bhareli Chowk, resulting in the arrest of 18 individuals, including two police personnel.

The operation took place in Ballia district, specifically at the Bhareli Chowk near the Narahi police station, which borders Bihar. The crackdown was initiated following numerous complaints about illegal extortion from vehicles passing through the area. ADG Varanasi and DIG Azamgarh spearheaded the operation, which led to the recovery of Rs 37,500 in cash.

During the raid, two police personnel were apprehended alongside 16 other individuals involved in the extortion racket. The Narahi police station in-charge, Patreelal, along with nine other police officials from Korantadi Chowki, were suspended. All individuals involved have been charged, and further investigations are underway.

The operation was conducted on the night of Wednesday at Bhareli Picket, located near the Ganga river bridge at the UP-Bihar border. Under the leadership of ADG Varanasi and DIG Azamgarh, the team acted on complaints of extortion from trucks loaded with sand, as well as vehicles carrying liquor and cattle. The raid, which began at midnight, led to the detention of 17 private workers along with the police personnel.

According to DIG Azamgarh, around 1,000 trucks travel from UP to Bihar daily, with each truck allegedly paying Rs 500 to the police personnel at Narahi station. This resulted in a daily collection of Rs 5 lakh and a monthly total of Rs 1.5 crore. He emphasized that an inspector alone could not handle such a large sum, indicating possible widespread involvement.

A significant number of bikes, registers, and mobile phones were seized from the location. The detained individuals were taken to a nearby temple for questioning, which continued throughout the night. By Thursday morning, the arrested individuals were brought to Ballia for further interrogation.

The investigation continued at Narahi police station, where the room of the station in-charge was sealed, and searches were conducted in the police barracks. Senior police officials, including DIG Vaibhav Krishna and SP Devaranjan Verma, were present at the site. The crackdown has led to significant disciplinary actions against the involved police officials, although no official statement has been released yet.
