In 2019, America’s most feared special operations unit, SEAL Team 6’s Red Squadron – the same squad that killed Osama bin Laden – was sent on a mission straight out of a spy thriller: sneak into North Korea and plant a listening device to monitor Kim Jong Un’s inner circle.

But what was meant to be a stealth operation quickly spiraled into a bloody disaster.

How the operation was planned

According to explosive revelations in a soon-to-be-released book, the plan was daring. The SEALs trained for weeks in freezing waters, preparing to infiltrate the North Korean coast using mini-submarines and scuba gear. Their target: install a covert surveillance device deep inside enemy territory at the height of Trump’s nuclear talks with Kim Jong Un. It was one of the most secretive missions undertaken during the Trump presidency.

The night of the mission

The SEALs launched under the cover of darkness. Everything was going smoothly.

As the commandos approached the shoreline, a small North Korean fishing boat appeared out of nowhere. Flashlights cut across the water. A fisherman dove into the sea. The mission was seconds away from being exposed. Panic set in. Shots were fired.

Civilians killed, cover-up begins

In the confusion, 2–3 unarmed fishermen were killed—ordinary civilians diving for shellfish. The SEALs, desperate to avoid leaving any trace, allegedly punctured the bodies’ lungs to make them sink, before retreating empty-handed.

The device was never planted. The mission failed.

Washington knew nothing

The fallout was massive. President Trump later claimed he had “no knowledge” of the mission, insisting he was hearing about it for the first time. Even more shocking, Congress was never formally briefed—a potential violation of law.

Only in 2021, after Joe Biden took office, was an independent review ordered. Select lawmakers were briefed behind closed doors, but the findings remain classified to this day.

What began as a mission to plant a spy device ended with dead civilians, a global scandal, and renewed scrutiny over America’s most secretive military unit.
