AI tools may also be used for translation under strict conditions. Editors must already possess sufficient proficiency in both languages to verify the accuracy of machine-generated translations, aligning with existing editorial standards.

In January, the platform reached agreements with major technology companies, including Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Perplexity, in part to offset the costs associated with large-scale data usage that has placed strain on its infrastructure.

The internal debate has also been shaped by emerging alternatives. References have surfaced to AI-driven projects such as “Grokipedia,” associated with Elon Musk, which are positioned as automated or ideologically distinct counterparts to Wikipedia.

For some editors, these developments underscore the stakes of maintaining editorial independence. Jimmy Wales once described Wikipedia as a “temple of the mind,” a characterization that continues to influence how contributors view their role.
