Late this month, the English-language version of Wikipedia formally restricted the use of large language models (LLMs) to generate or rewrite articles. The move followed prolonged internal discussions and a formal vote on March 20, where editors overwhelmingly supported tighter controls by a margin of 40 to 2.
The decision marks a turning point for a platform that has long relied on human volunteers to maintain accuracy and editorial standards, even as AI tools have rapidly expanded across the internet.

The new restrictions come after a period of experimentation that exposed deep divisions within the editing community. Over the past year, some editors had organized efforts to remove what they described as low-quality or “shoddy” AI-generated content from the platform.
Tensions escalated when the Wikimedia Foundation introduced AI-generated summaries at the top of articles. The feature was met with resistance from contributors, who argued it could misrepresent source material and dilute editorial oversight. The backlash ultimately led to the discontinuation of the experiment.
Ilyas Lebleu, a Wikipedia editor who proposed the latest guideline, told 404 Media that earlier concerns about restricting AI had seemed unlikely to gain traction. More recently, however, sentiment shifted as editors reported being overwhelmed by administrative issues linked to AI-generated content.
Defining Boundaries: What Is Allowed
The policy does not amount to a complete ban on AI tools but instead draws clear boundaries around their use.
Editors are permitted to use LLMs for limited assistance, such as suggesting minor copy edits, provided that all changes are reviewed by humans and that the AI does not introduce new, unsourced content. The guidelines emphasize caution, noting that AI systems can alter meaning in ways not supported by cited sources.
AI tools may also be used for translation under strict conditions. Editors must already possess sufficient proficiency in both languages to verify the accuracy of machine-generated translations, aligning with existing editorial standards.
The framework reflects an attempt to balance the utility of AI tools with the platform’s core principles of verifiability and reliability.
Broader Pressures and the Future of the Platform
The policy shift comes amid broader pressures facing Wikipedia as artificial intelligence companies increasingly rely on its vast repository of knowledge to train language models.
In January, the platform reached agreements with major technology companies, including Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Perplexity, in part to offset the costs associated with large-scale data usage that has placed strain on its infrastructure.
The internal debate has also been shaped by emerging alternatives. References have surfaced to AI-driven projects such as “Grokipedia,” associated with Elon Musk, which are positioned as automated or ideologically distinct counterparts to Wikipedia.
For some editors, these developments underscore the stakes of maintaining editorial independence. Jimmy Wales once described Wikipedia as a “temple of the mind,” a characterization that continues to influence how contributors view their role.
Now, as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent across digital platforms, Wikipedia’s latest policy reflects an effort to preserve that vision while adapting to a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
