Cybersecurity experts are raising alarms over a chilling new form of digital threat known as “vibe hacking.” This emerging crime trend leverages artificial intelligence to automate and industrialize cyberattacks, reducing the need for human expertise and dramatically accelerating the pace of digital extortion.
What began as a legitimate use of AI for workflow optimization, dubbed “vibe coding,” has morphed into a tool for mass-scale hacking operations. Fraudsters are now using AI-powered agents to write malicious code, steal sensitive data, and even negotiate ransom payments — all without direct human input.
Recent reports revealed that Anthropic’s AI model, Claude Code, was exploited by hackers to infiltrate 17 organizations, each of which was subsequently blackmailed for nearly $500,000. Dark web marketplaces are flooded with so-called “Evil LLMs” such as FraudGPT and WormGPT — versions of generative AI stripped of safety guardrails and sold for as little as $100.
AI Tools Turn Into Weapons
According to Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42, AI now allows cyberattacks to execute 100 times faster than traditional methods. A ransomware campaign that once required hours of planning can now be automated and deployed in under 25 minutes.
“Generative AI has lowered the barrier of entry for cybercriminals,” said Huzefa Motiwala, Senior Director at Palo Alto Networks. “Attackers can use mainstream AI systems to generate realistic phishing emails, create malware, or hide malicious code with ease.”

Experts warn that attacks no longer rely solely on user prompts — many stem from poisoned data, hidden instructions, or embedded malware in documents and images that AI systems later process. This automation has turned what used to be labor-intensive cyber intrusions into fully autonomous operations.
A new AI agent called PromptLock reportedly decides on its own which files to copy, encrypt, or delete, signaling a dangerous evolution toward self-directed digital crime.
From Phishing to Deepfakes: Industrialized Deception
The sophistication of AI-based attacks is reshaping the cybercrime landscape. “Vibe hacking represents a dangerous inflection point,” said Srinivas L, Joint MD and CEO of 63SATS Cybertech. “An individual with minimal skills can now orchestrate complex, multi-stage attacks using large language models and agentic AI tools.”
Experts say these tools can now:
Automate phishing and ransomware campaigns
Generate deepfake audio and video for identity theft
Craft polymorphic malware that evolves to evade detection
Conduct reconnaissance and tailor attacks for specific victims
According to Tarun Wig, CEO of Innefu Labs, “Attackers can now simulate entire organizations — from HR recruiters to financial officers — using AI-generated personas. The realism is terrifying.”
Authorities in Gujarat have already warned that AI crime kits are being traded on encrypted messaging apps, enabling small-time hackers to conduct operations once limited to major syndicates.
A Turning Point for AI and Cybersecurity
Industry leaders describe the Claude Code breach as a watershed moment — the first time a mainstream AI model has been used in a coordinated cyber-extortion campaign.
“AI has become a cybercrime enabler,” said Sundareshwar Krishnamurthy, Partner at PwC India. “What used to require teams of skilled hackers can now be done by one person with the right prompt and $100 in crypto.”
Vrajesh Bhavsar, CEO of Operant AI, warned that the Model Context Protocol (MCP) used by open-source AI servers could expose sensitive APIs and personal data through “context poisoning.” In some cases, malware is now embedded within training data or shared documents, triggering what experts call “zero-click” attacks — infections that require no user interaction.
The Need for Guardrails
Experts are urging major AI developers — including OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Google — to introduce structured safety trials, continuous model monitoring, and rigorous “red-teaming” to identify vulnerabilities before public release.
“They must treat AI model deployment like drug approvals,” said Wig. “Without testing and oversight, we’re handing criminals a weapon with infinite ammunition.”
As AI-driven cybercrime expands, so does its subtlety. The rise of “vibe scamming” — hyper-realistic phishing emails, fake websites, and tailored extortion messages — marks a point where even seasoned professionals can be deceived.
“AI has industrialized cybercrime,” said Srinivas L. “The next great cyber war won’t be fought by humans typing in dark rooms — it will be fought by algorithms learning, adapting, and attacking faster than we can react.”
