A US federal court has dismissed a civil lawsuit filed against OpenAI co-founder and chief executive Sam Altman by his sister, Annie Altman, who had accused him of repeated sexual abuse and rape during their childhood. The dismissal followed Annie Altman’s failure to attend a court-ordered independent medical examination despite explicit warnings from the bench regarding the legal consequences of non-compliance. In his order, US District Judge Zachary Bluestone terminated the proceedings on procedural grounds rather than issuing an exhaustive determination on the factual merits of the underlying claims.

Origins of the Lawsuit and Allegations

Annie Altman initiated the legal action in January 2025 in a federal court located in St. Louis, Missouri. Her complaint detailed allegations of repeated sexual abuse and rape at the family residence in Clayton, a suburb of St. Louis, spanning the years between 1997 and 2006. The filing asserted that the abuse commenced when she was three years old and Sam was 12, continuing until the final alleged incidents occurred after he had attained adulthood.

Sam Altman has consistently denied the claims, maintaining that the accusations surfaced on social media only after family members declined her requests for additional financial assistance. The Altman family has previously stated that Annie faces mental health challenges and has historically received monetary support from relatives. These assertions reflect the family position and have not been established as independent judicial findings.

Judicial Dismissal and Legal Representation

The dismissal materialized after Annie Altman refused to submit to the required independent medical examination, leading Judge Bluestone to bring the proceedings to a close. Laura Politi, counsel representing Annie Altman, did not immediately provide comment on the ruling. Santos Perez, an attorney who withdrew from her legal team earlier in the month, stated he was no longer authorized to comment formally on the litigation, though he reaffirmed his personal belief in her account. Legal counsel representing Sam Altman likewise did not immediately issue a public response following the entry of the order.

The litigation drew significant international attention due to Sam Altman’s prominence as a leading figure in the artificial intelligence sector. Following OpenAI’s public rollout of ChatGPT in 2022, his corporate and public profile grew substantially, placing his conduct and personal controversies under intense public examination that extended far beyond a private familial dispute.

Current Status and Procedural Grounds

The court order concludes the active proceedings in the civil suit, although the ruling rests solely on procedural compliance rather than an affirmative finding clearing or substantiating the claims. The judicial record reflects that the action was dismissed strictly because Annie Altman failed to undergo the scheduled medical evaluation after receiving advance cautions from the court.

Available court records do not indicate whether Annie Altman plans to file an appeal against the dismissal or pursue alternative legal remedies. Any further action in the matter will depend on subsequent procedural steps undertaken by the parties within the federal court system.
