UP State Tax Department 2024-25: Mobile Squads and SIB Recover ₹4,029 Crore in Tax, Strict Action on E-Way Bill Irregularities

Lucknow | The Uttar Pradesh State Tax Department has released its annual report for 2024-25, highlighting significant achievements in tax enforcement and revenue collection. According to the report, mobile squads and the Special Investigation Branch (SIB) together recovered ₹4,029.73 crore in tax evasion, leveraging vehicle inspections, e-way bill irregularities, and special investigations.

The report, presented by Chief Secretary M. Devaraj and Commissioner Dr. Nitin Bansal, revealed that 148 mobile squads across 20 zones inspected 43,377 vehicles during the year. Goods found with irregular or incomplete documentation were valued at ₹683.79 crore, on which the department successfully levied taxes and penalties.

In addition, the Special Investigation Branch (SIB) conducted large-scale audits of commercial establishments, recovering ₹2,193.94 crore in evaded taxes. The report notes that in 2024-25, the state tax department alone contributed 50.79% of total tax revenue, underscoring the efficiency of Uttar Pradesh’s tax administration.

Major Action on E-Way Bill Frauds: ₹1,152 Crore Recovered

In cases involving fraudulent e-way bills and other irregularities, the department successfully recovered ₹1,152 crore in outstanding taxes and penalties. The move is regarded as a key enforcement achievement for the year, strengthening compliance and plugging significant revenue leakages.

Steady Growth in State Tax Revenue

State tax revenue has shown a steady upward trajectory over the past five years:

  • 2020-21: ₹80,301.52 crore
  • 2021-22: ₹98,107.04 crore
  • 2022-23: ₹1,07,406.90 crore
  • 2023-24: ₹1,10,345.96 crore
  • 2024-25: ₹1,14,637.54 crore (3.89% growth)

The report emphasizes that the state tax department’s recoveries accounted for nearly half of the total revenue, highlighting the department’s role in strengthening financial governance.

Uttar Pradesh Leads in GST Registrations

In 2024-25, the state recorded 3.14 lakh new GST registrations, with a target of 1.39 lakh for 2025-26. These numbers place Uttar Pradesh at the top nationally in GST registration, reflecting strong compliance and administrative outreach.

VAT and Other Tax Collections

Key VAT collections for the year were reported as follows:

  • Petrol: ₹10,108.09 crore
  • Diesel: ₹17,093.26 crore
  • Natural Gas: ₹4,826.95 crore
  • Liquor for human consumption: ₹23.86 crore (62.32% increase)

Total VAT collection stood at ₹32,077.02 crore, registering a 3.46% growth over the previous year.

The report demonstrates that mobile squads and SIB have effectively curbed tax evasion, enhanced compliance, and improved transparency. With sustained growth in GST registrations and VAT collections, Uttar Pradesh continues to strengthen its financial stability and administrative capacity in revenue collection.
