The Union Budget 2025 has allocated over Rs 1,900 crore for cybersecurity initiatives, marking an increase from Rs 1,600 crore in the previous budget. This boost comes as India faces growing cyber threats, with digital fraud and cybercrime posing risks to financial and national security.

  • Cybersecurity capital projects: Rs 782 crore, up from Rs 759 crore in 2024.
  • CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team): Rs 255 crore, rising from Rs 238 crore last year.
  • Cybersecurity initiatives for women and children: Rs 44.39 crore, down from Rs 52.85 crore in 2024.

The increased funding aligns with the government’s strategy to combat cyber threats, recently emphasized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 115th episode of Mann Ki Baat. PM Modi highlighted alarming statistics from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), which reported losses exceeding Rs 11,300 crore due to stock trading scams and digital impersonation in the past year.

Notably, 67.8% of cybercrime complaints involved online financial fraud, underscoring the need for stronger protective measures.

President Droupadi Murmu, addressing Parliament, warned that digital fraud, cybercrime, and emerging threats like deepfakes pose serious challenges to India’s security. She assured that the government is actively enhancing cybersecurity measures while also generating employment opportunities in the sector. “India has achieved Tier-1 status in the Global Cybersecurity Index, reflecting the government’s continued efforts in strengthening national cyber defenses,” President Murmu stated.
