Unichem Laboratories Faces ₹87 Crore GST Penalty, ₹6.58 Crore Interest

Unichem Laboratories Limited has received an order involving a GST liability of ₹93.66 crore. The amount includes a penalty of ₹87 crore and interest of ₹6.58 crore. The company said it received the order after 2 pm on September 18, 2026. According to the company, the order is not expected to have any significant impact on its financial position, operations or other activities.

₹87 Crore Penalty Under CGST Act

The company informed the stock exchanges that the order was issued by the Commissioner (Appeals), Thane. Of the total ₹93.66 crore liability, ₹87 crore is a penalty imposed under Sections 74(1) and 122(2)(b) of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017. In addition, an interest liability of ₹6.58 crore has been determined.

The case relates to the cross-charge of shared services. The dispute concerns the timing of payment of the tax liability. According to the order, the tax liability was allegedly discharged after the time of supply. The matter is related to Section 13 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, and Rule 47 of the CGST Rules, 2017. The interest liability was determined in connection with the issue.

Company Plans to File Appeal

Unichem Laboratories said it will take appropriate steps against the order based on legal advice. The company said this includes filing an appeal within the prescribed timeframe. It also stated that it will pursue the matter through the relevant legal process.

US FDA Inspection at Kolhapur Facility

The GST order comes at a time when the company has also recently been involved in other regulatory developments. In February 2026, the company had announced that the US Food and Drug Administration had inspected its active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing facility in Kolhapur. The inspection was conducted between January 27 and February 2.

According to the company, the US regulatory inspection was completed with five observations. The company had said that it would submit its response to the US Food and Drug Administration within the prescribed 15-day period. The inspection and the GST order are separate regulatory matters, and the company has indicated that it will follow the relevant processes in both cases.

Unichem Shares Close 1.41% Higher

Unichem Laboratories’ shares also recorded gains in the stock market on September 18. On Friday, the company’s shares closed at ₹545.25 on the BSE, up ₹7.60, or 1.41%, from the previous closing price. The future impact of the GST order on the company’s stock will depend on market activity and the subsequent legal proceedings in the matter.
