India’s Unique Identification Authority (UIDAI) is preparing to launch a game-changing app—e-Aadhaar—which will allow citizens to update critical personal details like name, address, mobile number, and date of birth directly from their smartphones. Previously, these changes required a visit to an Aadhaar enrollment centre. The app is expected to roll out on both Android and iOS platforms later this year.
UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar confirmed that over 2,000 of the existing 100,000 Aadhaar authentication devices have already been upgraded to support the new system. Once fully deployed, only updates related to biometrics (fingerprint, iris scans) will require in-person visits—all other demographic changes can be handled via the app.

Modern Features for Enhanced Convenience & Security
The e-Aadhaar app comes packed with cutting-edge features aimed at partnering convenience with privacy:
- AI and Face ID Verification: Securely log in and authenticate using facial recognition.
- QR-Code Sharing: Generate and share full or masked Aadhaar data digitally—eliminating the need for photocopies.
From November 2025, UIDAI plans to streamline the process so that only biometric modifications will require field visits—changing the way identity updates are handled across the country.
Demographic Details, Digitised and Delivered
Under the current system, updating fields such as name, date of birth, or address involves using the online Self-Service Update Portal (SSUP)—which includes logging in via OTP, uploading documents, and tracking updates via an SRN.
The new e-Aadhaar app promises a more user-friendly experience:
- One-click access to update key biometric details.
- Reduces paperwork and queues, especially benefiting rural and time-constrained users.
- Seamlessly leverages UIDAI’s secure infrastructure—minimizing fraud risk.
Why It Matters
- Accessibility: Eliminates center visits for most updates—critical for rural populations and senior citizens.
- Security: AI-backed verification and digital protocols aim to reduce Aadhaar-related fraud.
- Innovation: With digital identity becoming second nature, the app brings Aadhaar into the modern age.
