UDAIPUR: Hacking of social media accounts, creating identical accounts, and cloning by cyber criminals have been on the rise for the past year, and even cops have been targeted.

Kailash Chandra Bishnoi, DIG-ACB, Udaipur, is the recent victim of cybercrime, with his account cloned by hackers. Conmen after cloning his account also tried to dupe people by requesting monetary assistance. However, the wrong-doing soon came to light as someone in his contact list suspected foul play and informed the officer.

On Thursday, Bishnoi told the SP office about cybercrime. He said that a hacker created a fake account in his name on a social media site and approached a few of his followers and friends for financial assistance. Bishnoi, who has worked as a police superintendent in many districts, has a sizable following, and the hackers attempted to take advantage of the situation by demanding financial assistance.

However, one of his friends on social media double-checked it with the cop, who found his account had been cloned. Bishnoi confirmed it to the administrator, who deleted the fake account and filed a complaint with the SP office.

It is not just policemen but criminals are targeting any public figure like politicians, lawyers, social worker etc.

Quick TIPS:

  • Never pay money online if someone is requesting for urgent monetary help. It can be a fraud.
  • Double check with the person if he is actually in distress and requires any assistance.
  • Chatting with person is not good enough as authentication as chances are high that the account is hacked or spoofed.
