US President Donald Trump has reignited global controversy by asserting that Greenland is part of the United States, sharing images of a new map in which the strategically located Arctic Island is shown as American territory.

The images, posted on Monday, depict Trump standing on Greenland soil holding the US flag, accompanied by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. A signboard visible in the image reads: “Greenland — US Territory from 2026.” The post immediately triggered sharp international reactions, particularly in Europe.

In another image released by Trump, he is seen holding a meeting with European leaders at the White House. A map displayed during the meeting shows Canada and Venezuela also marked as part of the United States, further intensifying diplomatic unease.

Trump speaks to NATO chief, reiterates security rationale

According to officials, Trump has also discussed the Greenland issue with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, reiterating that Greenland is crucial to US national security. The President reportedly told allies that there was “no question of stepping back” from the position, underlining the island’s strategic importance in the Arctic region amid rising geopolitical competition.

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has long held strategic value due to its location, natural resources and proximity to Arctic shipping routes and missile defence corridors.

US military aircraft deployed amid tensions

As diplomatic tensions with Denmark escalate, the United States has dispatched a military aircraft to Greenland under the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) framework.

The aircraft is scheduled to arrive at the Pituffik Space Base, NORAD confirmed in a social media statement. The command clarified that the deployment is part of pre-planned military activities and said both Denmark and Greenland authorities were informed in advance.

NORAD said the aircraft would operate alongside other US and Canadian assets stationed at the base and would participate in long-standing defence operations conducted under trilateral defence cooperation among the US, Canada and Denmark.

The command added that all necessary diplomatic clearances were obtained prior to the deployment and stressed that the activity should not be viewed as an escalation.

Strategic Arctic focus

US defence planners have repeatedly highlighted Greenland’s importance in early-warning systems, space surveillance and Arctic security, particularly as global powers expand their military and economic footprint in the region.

However, Trump’s public claims and symbolic assertions through maps and imagery have raised concerns among allies about the political messaging and diplomatic implications of such moves.

Officials said developments are being closely monitored, with further diplomatic engagements expected in the coming days.
