Tragic Toll of Sextortion: Gurudwara Cook’s Heartbreaking Suicide Unveils Online Extortion Nightmare
MUMBAI: In a heart-wrenching incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, a cook at a local Gurudwara took his own life, revealing a disturbing trail of sextortion that had plagued his final days. Mansingh Pawar, 41, was found hanging in his room on the Gurudwara premises on August 9. Two months later, as the police delved deeper into the case, a grim narrative of sextortion came to light. This tragedy marks the second sextortion-related suicide this month, raising questions about the handling of such cases.
An Unfolding Tragedy
On the fateful day of August 9, Mansingh Pawar’s life took a tragic turn as he was found hanging in his room. At the time, the police registered an accidental death report (ADR) and began investigating the incident. However, it wasn’t until recently that the true nature of the case emerged. The police, after a detailed examination of Pawar’s mobile phone, uncovered distressing WhatsApp messages that revealed a disturbing pattern of sextortion.

Pawar’s wife, Tulsabai, disclosed that her husband had been subjected to relentless threats from sextortion racketeers. They had even claimed to be officers from the Delhi Police Cyber Cell, showing their identity cards on WhatsApp. The messages, sent between August 7 and 9, demanded ₹56,000 from Pawar, threatening to upload a compromising video of him on YouTube.

Legal Dilemma
While the distressing details of the sextortion case have come to light, the response from the police has raised eyebrows. As of now, the police have filed a case against the unknown culprits for cheating and cyber fraud but have not added the charge of abetment to suicide.
Notably, on October 9, another distressing incident unfolded when an employee of the Central Railways took his own life, leaving behind a note detailing how he was being blackmailed by a woman he met on Facebook. This woman had recorded an embarrassing video of him and threatened to release it unless he paid a hefty sum. In this case, the police registered charges of abetment to suicide, extortion, and violation of privacy.
Seeking Accountability
Mansingh Pawar’s wife, Tulsabai, is keen on seeing those who extorted her husband held accountable for his tragic demise. While she was called to the police station to record her statement, she remains unaware of any formal FIR being registered in the case.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Krishnakant Upadhyay, clarified that the connection between the sextortion and Pawar’s suicide has not been conclusively established. He emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that if a link is found, the relevant charges will be added to the case.
Unanswered Questions
Pawar’s wife, who resides in Badlapur, is grappling with the shock of her husband’s tragic death. She remains in the dark about the reasons behind his extreme step, as he had not confided in her. The police have yet to share the FIR copy with her, stating that the case was registered based on information obtained from Pawar’s mobile phone.
Just one day before ending his life, Pawar made an urgent request to his wife, asking her to mortgage her gold ornaments and transfer the money to his account. She transferred a substantial sum but was left puzzled by the sudden need. Pawar explained that he would reveal the reasons later but abruptly ended the call.
Legal Expert Views
Legal experts have weighed in on the case, expressing their concerns about the charges filed. Former IPS officer turned lawyer Y P Singh has stated that charges of extortion should have been added, as money was clearly extorted from the victim. The possibility of adding charges related to abetment of suicide depends on the investigation’s findings and the nature of the crime.
As the investigation continues, the community is left to grapple with the tragic loss of Mansingh Pawar and the troubling questions surrounding the handling of sextortion-related cases. The case serves as a stark reminder of the need for a thorough examination of such incidents and a swift response to ensure justice for the victims.
