TIRUVALLUR:   A series of arrests and seizures in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district has cast new light on the expanding reach of synthetic drug networks in southern India.

A Crackdown Takes Shape in Tiruvallur

The Tiruvallur district police have intensified their campaign against synthetic drug trafficking amid growing concerns over the spread of narcotics such as methamphetamine and MDMA in Tamil Nadu. In a statement released this week, the district’s Superintendent of Police, Vivekananda Shukla, said that sustained enforcement operations had led to the arrest of nearly two dozen accused so far.

According to police data, approximately 373 grams of methamphetamine, 48 MDMA tablets weighing about 30 grams, and 2.8 grams of cocaine have been recovered in multiple operations across the district. Officials described the seizures as part of a broader effort to disrupt both retail-level distribution and the networks that enable drugs to move across State boundaries.

The police have indicated that these operations are not episodic but part of an ongoing drive, with a particular focus on dismantling organised syndicates rather than isolated offenders

Intelligence, Surveillance and a Local Breakthrough

The most recent arrests followed what investigators described as “credible information” regarding the inter-State movement of synthetic drugs. Acting on these leads, the police increased surveillance in and around Gummidipoondi, an industrial town that has also emerged as a transit point due to its connectivity.

After coordinated efforts, five men were detained and later arrested. Police said they recovered 56 grams of methamphetamine and eight MDMA tablets, weighing about four grams, along with other incriminating materials. The accused were identified as Santhosh, 24; Nataraj, 25; Kishoth Kumar, 24; Thavasi, 24; and Sundara Pandian, 24.

A case was registered at the Gummidipoondi police station under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, a stringent law that governs narcotics-related offences in India. All five were remanded to judicial custody.

The Inter-State Supply Chain

Investigators say the case fits a larger pattern that has become increasingly familiar to law enforcement agencies in southern India. Police allege that the accused were part of an inter-State trafficking cartel facilitating the transportation and distribution of synthetic narcotics from Bengaluru into Tamil Nadu.

Unlike traditional narcotics, synthetic drugs such as methamphetamine and MDMA are easier to transport in small quantities and yield higher profits, making them attractive to organised groups. Officials note that these substances often move along highways and commercial corridors, blending into legitimate transport networks.

While police have not disclosed details about upstream suppliers, they said the focus of the investigation has shifted toward identifying facilitators, financiers and logistical links that enable the flow of drugs across State borders.

Policing a Growing Synthetic Drug Threat

Senior police officials have framed the recent arrests as part of a wider response to what they describe as a growing synthetic drug problem in the region. Superintendent Shukla said strict action would continue against drug cartels and their facilitators, including those operating across State lines.
