In a significant relief for citizens, police in Telangana successfully recovered 106 lost and stolen mobile phones worth around ₹20 lakh and handed them back to their rightful owners during a special recovery drive.

The phones were returned at a Mobile Phone Recovery Mela organised at the district police office, where senior authorities personally handed over the devices, highlighting the growing efficiency of cyber and technical policing efforts.

Special recovery drive brings relief to victims

The recovery operation was carried out by dedicated cyber teams and technical staff, who tracked the devices across locations, including outside the state. The effort reflects increasing use of digital tools and coordinated policing to trace lost or stolen phones.

Many recipients expressed happiness and gratitude, stating they had lost hope of ever getting their devices back before being contacted by the police.

Addressing the event, the Superintendent of Police emphasised that mobile phones today are not just communication devices but store sensitive personal and financial information, including bank details, passwords, and private data.

He warned that if such devices fall into the wrong hands, they can be misused for financial fraud through apps like UPI platforms and digital wallets, making recovery efforts even more critical.

Advisory on reporting lost phones

Police urged citizens to act quickly if their phones are lost or stolen. People were advised to immediately:

  • Report the incident to the nearest police station
  • Register the device on the CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) portal
  • Block the phone to prevent misuse

Officials noted that early reporting significantly increases the chances of recovery and prevents unauthorised access to personal data.

Cyber awareness and public cooperation stressed

Authorities also used the occasion to raise awareness about rising cyber frauds, cautioning people against falling for fake offers, loan scams, or “digital arrest” threats by impersonators.

Police highlighted that public cooperation plays a crucial role in tackling such crimes, encouraging citizens to report suspicious activities and remain vigilant.

The initiative showcases how technology-driven policing and citizen awareness can together help combat cybercrime and recover valuable assets.

With mobile phones becoming indispensable in modern life, such recovery drives not only restore property but also protect individuals from potential financial and data-related risks.
