TCS Faces Scrutiny After Allegations of Unlawful Job Terminations

Mumbai — Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services company, is facing official scrutiny after the Labour Commissionerate issued a show-cause notice seeking clarification on allegations that the company terminated 2,500 employees without following due process. The action comes after a complaint filed by the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), an employee-rights group that has increasingly challenged hiring and firing practices in the country’s tech sector.

According to NITES, TCS is in the process of reducing its workforce by as many as 12,000 employees nationally, including roughly 2,500 employees based in Pune alone. The organisation alleged that several employees were removed “illegally” without proper documentation, consultation, or severance protocols.

Labour Commissioner Seeks Clarification

Deputy Labour Commissioner Nikhil Walke took cognisance of the complaint and issued a show-cause notice to TCS, asking the company to explain the rationale behind the employee reduction and address allegations of wrongful termination.

Officials said the notice requires TCS to justify the layoffs and demonstrate compliance with employment rules, particularly provisions protecting workers from arbitrary dismissal. The company has not issued a public statement regarding the allegations or the notice.

Broader Industry Impact

The development comes at a time when India’s IT sector — long considered a secure employer — faces slowing global demand, margin pressures, and heightened scrutiny over workforce practices. Employee groups argue that many companies are resorting to “silent layoffs” by forcing workers to resign or withholding key internal processes like project allocation.

The labour department’s intervention signals increasing regulatory oversight at a moment when tech workers are seeking stronger protections amid market uncertainty.

Awaiting TCS Response

The matter is expected to proceed after TCS submits its formal reply. Depending on the response, authorities may call hearings, seek additional information, or initiate further action. For now, the notice marks a rare confrontation between one of India’s most influential companies and labour regulators.
