In an age where identity theft and mobile fraud are rapidly growing, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched the TAFCOP portal to empower citizens to detect and report unauthorized SIM cards registered in their names. But how effective is it? We dig deep into the system that’s quietly helping Indians take back control.
A Portal Against Invisible Threats
In a bold step toward citizen digital empowerment, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) launched the Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection (TAFCOP) portal—an online platform that lets individuals verify all SIM cards registered against their name. As telecom services increasingly become the gateway to banking, social media, and digital life, the misuse of SIM cards has become a growing national threat.
Launched under the umbrella of the Sanchar Saathi initiative, TAFCOP is a user-friendly interface aimed at tackling rampant issues of identity misuse where SIM cards are fraudulently obtained in someone else’s name and later used for illicit activities, including financial frauds, phishing, and cybercrimes.
With over 1.1 billion wireless subscribers in India, the risk of mobile-linked fraud isn’t hypothetical—it’s happening daily. TAFCOP empowers users to detect if there are unknown mobile connections tied to their Aadhaar-linked identity and provides a direct channel to report them.

The Process:
Six Steps to Securing Your Digital Identity
Using TAFCOP is as simple as it is important. Here’s how it works:
- Visit the official TAFCOP website: https://tafcop.sancharsaathi.gov.in/telecomUser
- Enter your mobile number and solve the CAPTCHA to authenticate yourself.
- An OTP (One-Time Password) is sent to your number.
- Enter the OTP on the portal to verify your identity.
- The portal then displays a list of all mobile numbers registered under your name.
- If you find any suspicious or unauthorized numbers, you can flag them for further investigation.
This real-time check is essential in a country where identity documents like Aadhaar are frequently misused to issue fake SIM cards. Victims often remain unaware until they’re caught in legal or financial trouble for a number they never used.
Challenges, Impact, and Way Forward
While the portal has been praised for its proactive approach, experts warn that awareness remains the biggest hurdle. A significant section of rural and semi-urban populations still remains unaware of TAFCOP or lacks the digital literacy to utilize it. Moreover, while the portal helps flag unauthorized SIMs, it relies heavily on user vigilance.
Cybersecurity professionals emphasize the role of telecom operators in following stringent Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols. “The TAFCOP initiative is a strong beginning,” says Ravi Bhatnagar, a digital fraud analyst. “But systemic change will only come when telecom retailers are held accountable for every fraudulent issuance.”
To make this tool more accessible, DoT has also introduced awareness campaigns and regional language support. Meanwhile, security officials are urging every citizen to perform this check routinely—especially those who have submitted their ID documents in public or semi-public contexts like hotel check-ins, employment drives, or courier bookings.
