New Delhi, October 15, 2025 – Jagran Correspondent: In a major relief ahead of Diwali, the Supreme Court of India has allowed the sale and use of green crackers in Delhi–NCR between October 18 and October 21. The court’s decision is seen as a significant step toward maintaining a balance between environmental protection and festive traditions.
Relief and Celebration Among Residents
The apex court’s order has sparked joy across the Delhi–NCR region. Residents will now be able to purchase and burst eco-friendly green crackers within the permitted time frame, ensuring that Diwali celebrations continue without fear of legal action.

Bench of CJI B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran
A bench comprising Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran delivered the order after considering the submissions of the Solicitor General and the Amicus Curiae.
The court noted that the industry had raised concerns regarding the smuggling of traditional firecrackers, which often leads to higher pollution levels. The bench emphasized the need for a balanced and regulated approach to address both environmental and cultural concerns.
The Supreme Court also directed that patrolling teams conduct regular inspections of cracker manufacturing units and that all approved green crackers must carry a QR code uploaded on the official monitoring portal to ensure authenticity and compliance.
Green Crackers Reduced Emissions Significantly
The court observed that despite earlier bans on conventional firecrackers, air quality levels did not improve substantially, except during the COVID-19 period. Following the Arjun Gopal case, the concept of green crackers was introduced, leading to a significant reduction in harmful emissions over the past six years.
The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) has played a key role in developing these eco-friendly alternatives.
It may be recalled that a complete ban on the production of green crackers was in place from October 14, 2024, to January 1, 2025, to streamline regulatory compliance and ensure environmental safety.
A Balanced Step Forward
The Supreme Court’s decision reflects a measured approach — upholding the spirit of Diwali while reinforcing the importance of environmental responsibility. Allowing green crackers for a limited period strikes the right balance, ensuring that the festival of lights is celebrated without compromising the air we breathe.
