On April 27, Sportskeeda posted a message on its verified social media accounts describing Jammu and Kashmir as “Indian-occupied Kashmir” (IoK) while reporting on the Indian Volleyball Team’s withdrawal from the Central Asian Championship in protest against the Pahalgam terror attack.
The phrase “Indian-occupied Kashmir” is historically associated with Pakistan’s political narrative to challenge India’s sovereignty over the region. Its use by an Indian media platform triggered swift and intense criticism from citizens, public figures, and political commentators, accusing Sportskeeda of promoting a “fake Pakistani narrative.”
The development came just days after 26 civilians, predominantly Hindus, were killed in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Anantnag district, Jammu & Kashmir — a tragedy attributed to Pakistan-sponsored extremist groups. Against this backdrop, the platform’s terminology appeared even more insensitive and damaging.
Sportskeeda’s Clarification and Public Apology
Facing growing outrage, Sportskeeda issued a public apology on April 28, calling the post an “oversight” and asserting that the company respects India’s sovereignty.
“We regret an error in our recent post where we referred to Kashmir with incorrect terminology. It was an oversight at our end, and we apologize for hurting anyone’s sentiments and causing any harm,” the platform said in its statement.
“We respect India’s sovereignty over Kashmir and acknowledge it as an integral part of India,” Sportskeeda added, clarifying its official position.
The platform emphasized that it has always strived to promote a multi-sport culture in India and reaffirmed its commitment to accuracy and sensitivity in its reporting. It further revealed that disciplinary action had been taken against the staff member responsible for the post.
Broader Implications and the Importance of Narrative Integrity
The controversy has reignited debates over the responsibilities of Indian media organizations in safeguarding national narratives, especially on sensitive issues like Kashmir.

Security experts and political analysts emphasized that terminology such as “Indian-occupied Kashmir” is not merely a semantic error but carries significant geopolitical implications. Using language historically weaponized by Pakistan undermines India’s position globally and domestically, experts warned.
The episode also highlighted how sports journalism — traditionally viewed as neutral ground — is not immune from broader political sensitivities and can easily become a flashpoint in the larger battle over narratives.
As the digital media landscape grows more influential, calls are growing louder for news outlets, especially major platforms like Sportskeeda, to exercise greater editorial caution, particularly on national security and territorial integrity matters.
