Shyambir Singh IAS Officer Faces Criminal Contempt Case For Allegedly Threatening Judge
In a significant move, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court has directed IAS officer Shyambir to appear in court on charges of criminal contempt. The order comes after allegations surfaced that Shyambir, currently serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Ganderbal, threatened a lower court judge in retaliation for a judicial decision against him.
The case traces back to a recent judgment delivered by Chief Judicial Magistrate Fayaz Ahmad Qureshi in Ganderbal. Following the unfavorable ruling, Shyambir allegedly began efforts to malign and intimidate the judge. The High Court has taken serious note of these allegations, particularly the misuse of official machinery to carry out personal vendettas.
On July 23, Justice Qureshi highlighted the severity of the situation, mentioning that Shyambir had issued threats to defame the judge and carried out a personal attack. Further accusations include misusing his position to harass the judge concerning his legitimate property and sending patwaris (revenue officials) multiple times to disrupt the judge’s affairs.
Despite multiple summonses, Shyambir failed to appear in court, neither providing a response nor attending the hearings. This led the Sub-Judge to escalate the matter to the High Court, which subsequently issued a stern directive for the officer to present himself by August 5 at 11 a.m.
The High Court’s order clearly states that failure to comply will compel the court to take necessary actions. Senior advocate R.R. Jain has been appointed as amicus curiae to assist the court in this matter. This incident is part of an ongoing series of contempt proceedings initiated last month following Shyambir’s alleged personal attacks on the judge.
The legal community and public at large are closely watching this case, which underscores the judiciary’s commitment to upholding its dignity and independence against any form of intimidation or abuse of power.
