Shamli | A major financial fraud case has surfaced in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district after allegations that a Bank Mitra associated with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch in Jalalabad failed to deposit cash collected from customers into their accounts, leading to suspected embezzlement worth crores of rupees. The incident has triggered panic and anger among account holders, who staged a protest at the bank premises.
According to information, several customers had handed over cash to the Bank Mitra on different dates for deposit into their respective bank accounts. However, when the amounts did not reflect even after a considerable period, customers checked their account statements and discovered no corresponding entries, raising suspicions of fraud. The revelation quickly escalated into a public outcry.

The affected customers claim that the scale of the fraud could run into crores, as multiple individuals have reported losses ranging from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹6 lakh each. With more victims coming forward, the total financial discrepancy is expected to be significantly higher, impacting numerous families in the region.
Following the discovery, a large number of people gathered at the bank branch and raised slogans against the management, demanding accountability. Protesters alleged that they entrusted their money to the bank system in good faith, but are now facing severe financial losses due to the alleged misconduct.
The bank branch management stated that the concerned Bank Mitra had already been removed from service after irregularities were noticed. However, aggrieved customers argue that termination alone does not resolve their losses and that the bank must take responsibility for safeguarding deposited funds. The issue has led to growing tension between customers and bank authorities.
Police officials have confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the matter. Authorities are examining the role of the Bank Mitra, transaction records, and cash flow patterns. Bank documents and digital records are being scrutinized to determine where the funds were diverted and whether additional individuals were involved in the alleged fraud.
Officials further indicated that the investigation is also exploring whether the incident is an isolated case or part of a wider network operating through banking intermediaries. All financial transactions are being analyzed to trace the complete money trail.
Banking experts note that the Bank Mitra system was introduced to enhance financial inclusion in rural and semi-urban areas, but inadequate monitoring has occasionally led to misuse and irregularities. Such incidents highlight the urgent need for stronger oversight and accountability mechanisms within the system.
Authorities have urged the public to ensure proper receipts and official confirmation for all financial transactions and to report any suspicious activity immediately to the bank or concerned authorities.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns about the reliability of intermediary banking channels in rural regions. Local residents believe that timely monitoring and stricter controls could have prevented such a large-scale financial loss.
At present, the Bank Mitra is reported to be absconding, and police teams are actively searching for him. Officials have assured that a thorough investigation will be completed and strict legal action will be taken against those found responsible. Efforts are also being made to recover the misappropriated funds and compensate the affected customers where possible.
