Prayagraj: A controversy has erupted within government circles over an alleged “royal protocol” issued for a proposed visit to Prayagraj. After the document surfaced on social media, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia took a stern view and issued a show-cause notice to the Director of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Vivek Banzal. The proposed visit scheduled for February 25 has been cancelled with immediate effect.

How Did the Controversy Begin?
The issue began after a protocol dated February 19 came into the public domain. The document reportedly assigned more than 50 officials to make arrangements for a visit to the Sangam area in Prayagraj, including bathing arrangements, transportation, meals, and even personal-use items.
It detailed a minute-by-minute schedule and designated specific officers to manage responsibilities such as handling clothes and towels after the holy dip.
As soon as the order went viral, it drew sharp criticism on social media. Critics described it as an example of “royal hospitality” and “VIP culture,” questioning whether the use of public resources in such a manner aligned with administrative norms and expectations of simplicity in public service.
Minister’s Stern Message
Taking serious note of the matter, the minister made it clear that unnecessary display and misuse of official machinery would not be tolerated. He directed that accountability be fixed and sought an explanation within seven days.
According to sources, the notice seeks clarification on the circumstances under which the protocol was prepared and whether it had received formal approval from higher authorities.
Transfers and Administrative Action
Following instructions from the headquarters, Prayagraj’s PGMT Brajendra Kumar Singh has been transferred to Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh. Another official has been shifted to the Network Transmission North Unit.
A departmental spokesperson confirmed that the earlier protocol order has been declared null and void, and the proposed visit stands cancelled.
Detailed Schedule for Sangam Visit
The document reportedly included a detailed blueprint for arrangements at Triveni Sangam, including time scheduling for the holy dip, transportation logistics, and reception protocol. Administrative circles noted that deploying such a large number of officials could have impacted routine departmental functioning.
Internal Review Underway
In the aftermath of the controversy, the department has initiated an internal review. Sources indicate that stricter adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for official visits will be ensured in the future to prevent similar situations.
A Broader Debate on ‘VIP Culture’
The episode has now sparked a wider debate about simplicity, transparency, and accountability in governance. Experts point out that in the digital era, administrative decisions are quickly scrutinized in the public domain, leading to immediate public reaction.
For now, the department awaits explanations from the concerned officials. The minister’s firm stance sends a clear message: any “special arrangements” outside established norms will not be tolerated in government functioning.
