The State Bank of India (SBI) has opened applications for twelve senior specialist posts, a rare contract-based drive aimed at strengthening its cyber defenses. The positions—ranging from Centre Head to Senior and Deputy Vice Presidents across cyber policy, innovation, research, and defense—signal the bank’s determination to respond to the rising tide of cyber threats in India’s financial sector.

Applicants have until September 15, 2025, to register online, with fees accepted only through SBI’s portal. The advertisement, issued under CRPD/SCO/2025-26/08, underlines both the urgency and exclusivity of the initiative: candidates can apply for just one post, and incomplete or duplicate applications will be summarily rejected.

Positions with Prestige and Pressure

The recruitment notice offers a snapshot of how SBI envisions its future in digital resilience. At the top of the hierarchy, the Centre Head will command the Cyber Security Centre of Excellence, overseeing research, innovation, and crisis response. Three Senior Vice Presidents will head units on policy, advisory, and innovation, while eight Deputy Vice Presidents will focus on specialized hubs, including cyber defense, benchmarking, and citizen-centric initiatives.

All postings are pegged to Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, placing the bank’s cyber nerve center in India’s financial capital. Candidates are expected to bring not only technical expertise but also strategic foresight, with age limits ranging from 35 to 50 years, depending on rank.

Lucrative Pay, Demanding Roles

SBI has promised competitive remuneration—₹1 crore annually for the Centre Head, ₹80 lakh for Senior Vice Presidents, and ₹60 lakh for Deputy Vice Presidents. These packages, split into 90 percent fixed and 10 percent variable pay, come with annual increments tied to performance. The three-year contracts may be extended by two years, but no engagement will exceed five.

Variable pay hinges on stringent performance metrics: officers delivering less than 90 percent of targets will see bonuses slashed, while those achieving near-perfection will reap the full reward. This system underscores the bank’s intent to hold even its top cyber strategists accountable.

Beyond Banking: A National Security Imperative

The eligibility criteria highlight a mix of leadership, technical, and ethical qualities. SBI is seeking professionals capable of guiding research labs, shaping national-level cyber policy, and engaging with regulators, academia, and industry alike. The roles demand expertise in threat intelligence, innovation labs, and citizen awareness programs—suggesting that the bank views cybersecurity not merely as risk mitigation but as a pillar of public trust.

The announcement arrives as India’s financial sector faces an evolving wave of phishing scams, ransomware incidents, and state-linked cyber intrusions. By embedding cybersecurity into its leadership fabric, SBI is positioning itself as both a banking giant and a cyber sentinel, a role that extends far beyond balance sheets and into the architecture of national resilience.
