In a bid to strengthen public awareness around digital safety, the local police in Rourkela organised a major walkathon from Chhend Chowk to the Uditnagar Fitness Park. More than 1,000 participants — including police officers and students — joined the event, carrying banners that urged safe online practices, responsible digital behaviour, and measures to prevent cyber fraud.
Local Police Take Proactive Steps
Flagging off the event, SP Nitesh Wadhwani emphasised that individual awareness remains “the most powerful weapon against cyber-crime”. He noted that many victims fall prey to scams simply due to ignorance or carelessness. With the recent establishment of a dedicated Cyber Crime & Economic Offences police station and intensified training of personnel in cyber investigation techniques, Rourkela’s law-enforcement capacity is now considerably strengthened.
Identifying Key Risk Groups
The SP drew attention to the fact that employees of the nearby Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) and senior citizens are frequent targets of cyber fraud schemes — especially fake online stock-investment scams. The police have already organised special awareness drives for these vulnerable groups. Wadhwani also urged citizens to stay alert, handle digital platforms cautiously, and promptly report any suspected cyber-crime incidents.
