Rentomojo Data Breach Exposes 1.5 Lakh Users’ Confidential Information, Sparks Outrage
Rentomojo, an online rental marketplace start-up operated by Edunetwork Pvt. Ltd, has reported a security breach that may have affected its 1.5 lakh subscribers. The start-up, which allows users in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, and Pune to rent furniture, utilities, and motorbikes on a subscription basis, stated that it has reported the incident to the appropriate authorities and is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

Breached Database Does Not Contain Financial Information
According to an email sent by Rentomojo to its subscribers, the company’s security team detected unauthorized access to one of its databases. The attackers were able to obtain unauthorized access to customer data, including personally identifiable information, by exploiting cloud misconfiguration through sophisticated attacks.

Rentomojo clarified that the breach will not affect any financial information like credit cards, debit cards, or UPI, as the firm does not store them in its database.
Measures Taken by Rentomojo to Ensure Security
To mitigate the risk of further breaches, Rentomojo has taken the following measures:
- Secured the database and encrypted all information stored in it.
- Strengthened its infrastructure with advanced security practices like Intelligent Threat Detection, Sensitive Data Discovery, and logging IP traffic
- Implemented multi-factor authentication (MFA) for additional layers of protection
- Conducting ongoing security audits and vulnerability assessments
- Rotated all access tokens and updated all passwords immediately
- Implemented Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) for its network
- Reviewed all third-party and open-source plugins and integrations
User Outrage on Social Media
Meanwhile, users of Rentomojo have expressed their outrage on social media platforms, asking for an explanation from the company. One user on Twitter wrote, “Disturbing news! @rentomojo data breach has led to the exposure of my confidential information. Hackers are now blackmailing to release my personal data. This is a serious breach of privacy and security.”
Rentomojo has not yet released an official statement addressing the user concerns on social media.
Data breaches have become a growing concern for businesses, and Rentomojo’s breach highlights the importance of companies taking security measures seriously.
