The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched the Digital Payments Awareness Week under its “Har Payment Digital” initiative, starting Monday. This year’s theme is ‘Safe Digital Payments’, aimed at educating people on how to remain vigilant during digital transactions and protect themselves against financial fraud. The campaign will run until March 15.
The inauguration program was held at the administrative office of the State Bank of India on Mall Road, Kanpur, with bank officials and RBI Regional Director Rajeev Dwivedi in attendance. Officials cited a report stating that in the past year, approximately ₹22,000 crore was lost to digital fraud nationwide. Around 77% of victims reportedly fell for enticing offers and lost their money.
Awareness and Immediate Action Are Key:
Rajneesh Kumar, Deputy General Manager of SBI Kanpur, emphasized that awareness is the most effective way to prevent fraud. He advised that if anyone suspects fraud, they should immediately inform their bank or the police. Account holders can also dial 1930 to block their accounts. He highlighted that vigilance in digital transactions is the strongest shield against fraud.
Use Mobile, But Don’t Be a Slave to It:
RBI Regional Director Rajeev Dwivedi warned that extreme caution is necessary to avoid digital fraud. While mobile phones and the internet are useful, users should not become dependent or careless. He advised against sharing personal information such as photos, birth dates, and addresses on social media.
Dwivedi cited an example where a government official’s son shared pictures of a foreign trip online. Fraudsters later threatened the family and demanded money, ultimately emptying the account. The incident illustrates how even minor carelessness can lead to falling prey to fraudsters.
Caution is Security:
Officials also stressed that greed and negligence are the biggest vulnerabilities in digital transactions. Falling for attractive offers or promises and sharing financial or personal information can lead to serious losses. Citizens are advised to remain vigilant in all digital transactions and report any suspicious activity immediately.
The campaign aims to raise public awareness about digital security and provide accurate information to prevent digital fraud.
