Police in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district have registered an FIR against a man accused of withdrawing ₹2.804 million (₹28.04 lakh) from his wife’s bank account without her knowledge or consent. Acting on the woman’s complaint, Bhupdevpur Police registered a case under Section 316(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation. Authorities are examining bank documents and account records as part of the probe.
According to police, Prabha Dansena (38), a resident of Kiritmal village, stated in her complaint that she has been living separately with her son in a rented house in Vikas Nagar since 2024 following a marital dispute with her husband, Manoj Dansena. Divorce and maintenance proceedings between the couple are currently pending before the Family Court in Raigarh.
The complainant alleged that she maintained a savings account at a Gramin Bank branch in Bhupdevpur, where she had accumulated her personal savings over several years. She claimed that her husband, without her knowledge or consent, submitted an application to the bank to add his name to the account, converting it into a joint account.
According to the complaint, while the couple was living separately, Manoj Dansena allegedly withdrew ₹2,804,710 from the account on July 3. The woman said she discovered the withdrawal only when she later visited the bank to withdraw money and was informed that the entire balance had already been withdrawn.
After learning about the transaction, she informed her family members and lodged a complaint at Bhupdevpur Police Station. Based on her complaint, police registered an FIR against the accused husband and initiated an investigation.
Investigators are examining bank records, documents related to the conversion of the account into a joint account, the application submitted for the change, withdrawal records, and other relevant evidence. Police are also verifying whether the process of converting the account complied with the bank’s prescribed procedures and whether any irregularities occurred during the process.
Renowned cybercrime expert and former IPS officer Prof. Triveni Singh said account holders should regularly monitor their bank accounts and keep SMS and email transaction alerts enabled. He advised that any unauthorized changes to account details or suspicious financial transactions should be reported immediately to the bank and law enforcement authorities so that timely legal action can be initiated.
