Washington/Moscow/Kyiv:     US President Donald Trump has claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to a one-week ceasefire in Ukraine, citing humanitarian concerns amid extreme winter conditions. Speaking during a cabinet meeting on Thursday, Trump described the development as a “very positive signal”, saying the request was made in view of the severe cold and the extensive damage inflicted on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure by ongoing Russian strikes.

A Claimed Ceasefire Amid Extreme Winter

According to Trump, repeated Russian attacks have severely impacted Ukraine’s power grid and heating systems, leaving large sections of the civilian population without basic services at a time of freezing temperatures. He said he personally urged Putin to halt attacks temporarily to allow relief for civilians struggling through what he described as unprecedented cold. Trump added that Putin had agreed to a one-week pause in attacks, though no formal confirmation has yet been issued by Moscow.

“I have never experienced cold like this,” Trump said, stressing that the ceasefire request was made on humanitarian grounds. He said the agreement, if implemented, would offer much-needed relief to Ukrainian civilians whose homes, power supply and heating networks have been repeatedly targeted.

Fighting Continues Despite Diplomatic Claims

However, the situation on the ground remains volatile. Even as Trump spoke of a ceasefire, reports from Ukraine indicated continued hostilities. Ukrainian authorities said Russian drone attacks killed three civilians on Thursday. Officials reported that Zaporizhzhia and surrounding areas were targeted overnight, causing damage to residential and commercial buildings and further disrupting electricity and heating services.

A Limited Humanitarian Gesture

Amid the continuing violence, Russia and Ukraine carried out a rare humanitarian exchange involving the bodies of soldiers killed in the war. Under a mutual arrangement, Russia returned around 1,000 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers, while Moscow said it received the remains of 38 Russian troops from Kyiv. Ukraine’s prisoner exchange coordination headquarters confirmed that the exchange had taken place. The move was seen as a limited humanitarian gesture in an otherwise brutal conflict.

Despite this development, Ukrainian leadership has voiced serious concerns about Russia’s intentions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on Thursday that Russia may be preparing for intensified attacks in the coming days. Citing intelligence assessments, Zelenskyy said there were indications that major strikes were being planned against key cities and critical infrastructure, potentially aimed at maximising damage before any pause in fighting.

Kyiv’s Skepticism and Warnings of Escalation

Zelenskyy urged Ukraine’s international partners to remain alert and maintain pressure on Moscow, arguing that temporary gestures should not distract from the broader military threat. His remarks underscored the scepticism in Kyiv over the durability and intent behind any proposed ceasefire.

Diplomatic efforts to revive talks between the two sides are continuing, with another round of discussions expected on Sunday. Previous negotiations, however, have failed to produce lasting outcomes, and earlier ceasefire understandings have collapsed amid mutual accusations of violations.

Security analysts remain divided over the implications of a possible one-week ceasefire. Some experts say any pause in hostilities could offer crucial humanitarian relief, allowing repairs to damaged infrastructure and easing civilian suffering during extreme weather. Others caution that a short ceasefire may also provide Russia with an opportunity to regroup, replenish supplies or finalise preparations for future offensives.

Energy Strain and Uncertain Prospects

Energy specialists have warned that Ukraine’s energy system is under severe strain. Repeated attacks on power stations, substations and heating facilities have left many regions facing rolling outages. With temperatures dropping below zero in several areas, the risk of a wider humanitarian crisis remains high. A temporary halt in attacks, even if limited, could allow emergency repairs and stabilisation efforts.

For now, a sharp contrast remains between diplomatic claims and battlefield realities. While Trump has spoken of a one-week ceasefire agreement, continued drone strikes and military warnings suggest that fighting has not abated. Whether the reported understanding translates into an actual pause on the ground, or remains confined to diplomatic statements, is expected to become clearer in the days ahead.

The coming week will test whether humanitarian considerations can override strategic calculations, or whether the war’s relentless momentum will continue despite talk of restraint.
