The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has filed a fresh case against dismissed Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gursher Singh Sandhu and his mother, Sukhwant Kaur, for allegedly accumulating assets disproportionate to their legitimate income. According to officials, Gursher declared an income of approximately ₹26 lakh over a span of three years, yet the bureau uncovered expenditures and asset acquisitions totaling ₹2.59 crore—nearly ten times his stated earnings.

The case, registered by the Mohali flying squad, comes amid mounting allegations surrounding Gursher’s financial dealings and abuse of power during his tenure. Raids are underway at multiple locations to apprehend him, though sources suggest he may have fled abroad.

This development adds to the mounting legal and administrative troubles for the former officer, whose career trajectory has shifted dramatically—from a self-styled “encounter specialist” in the Mohali police to a fugitive facing serious corruption and criminal charges.

Corruption, Land Fraud, and Extortion: The Crumbling Empire of Gursher Singh

Gursher Singh Sandhu was dismissed from service in October 2024 following a series of grave allegations, including corruption, forgery, and extortion. His pre-arrest bail plea was denied in January 2025 by a local court, after which he disappeared and has remained untraceable since.

Investigators accuse Gursher of orchestrating elaborate land fraud schemes by purchasing disputed parcels at below-market prices and reselling them at inflated rates. He allegedly filed false complaints through proxies to harass landowners and extract settlements under duress. Victims of these scams escalated the matter, leading to judicial intervention.

In one instance, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the registration of an FIR against Gursher, resulting in charges under IPC Sections 419 (cheating by impersonation), 465 (forgery), 467 and 468 (forgery of valuable documents), 471 (use of forged documents as genuine), and multiple sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Lawrence Bishnoi Interview Fallout: Political Uproar and Departmental Collapse

The turning point in Gursher Singh’s downfall was his alleged involvement in facilitating a custodial interview of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, which was recorded and aired while Bishnoi was in Punjab Police custody. The incident occurred at the CIA staff office in Kharar, where Gursher was posted as DSP (Investigation), and was frequently present.

The public broadcast of the interview triggered a political firestorm and drew sharp criticism over the security lapses within the police force. The Punjab and Haryana High Court intervened, prompting a high-level inquiry that ultimately led to Gursher’s dismissal and suspension of seven other police personnel allegedly complicit in the incident.

The vigilance bureau has since intensified its probe into Gursher’s network of transactions, focusing on real estate holdings, offshore links, and the flow of money into shell companies and proxies.

As the manhunt continues, authorities are also exploring international legal assistance options if his presence abroad is confirmed. The investigation is expected to expand further, with officials vowing to expose the full extent of the corruption and collusion that enabled Gursher Singh Sandhu’s unchecked rise within the police ranks.
