Public sector banks are preparing to introduce three financial products covering savings, investments, insurance and loans to attract younger customers. The initiative follows Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s call for banks to strengthen their engagement with young Indians.
What Are Banks Planning?
The proposed products will offer similar features across participating public sector banks, although individual lenders may introduce additional benefits. Officials said the products are expected to be launched before Diwali. Banks are also considering incentives, including possible fee waivers, to encourage young customers to open accounts.
The initiative aims to make banking services more accessible while encouraging participation in the formal financial system.

What Will the Portal Offer?
Banks are developing a shared digital portal that will provide information on financial products and services.
The platform is expected to include interactive features covering financial planning, entrepreneurship and responsible financial behaviour. Banks have shared branch and ATM location details to support a branch locator facility. The portal is expected to become operational by the end of November.
Why Is the Government Targeting Youth?
At the PSB Confluence held in August, Sitharaman urged public sector banks to improve their appeal among Generation Z customers.
She asked banks to understand younger customers’ expectations while maintaining the seriousness and reliability associated with banking. The minister also proposed free online courses, lifestyle-related benefits and dedicated spaces such as Yuva Kiosks or Yuva Banking Mitras to improve engagement.
How Will Financial Awareness Improve?
Banks have been asked to educate young customers about maintaining good credit scores, responsible borrowing and government credit schemes.
The proposed portal may include quizzes, graphics and certificates designed to make financial education more engaging. Sitharaman also encouraged banks to extend awareness programmes beyond branches to colleges, universities and skill-development institutions.
What Is the Banking for Youth Campaign?
A month-long Banking for Youth campaign began on October 2, targeting individuals aged 16 and above.
Coordinated by the Indian Banks’ Association, the campaign seeks to build lasting relationships between banks and young customers rather than limiting engagement to account opening.
The420 Insight: Financial Awareness Matters
The proposed products and digital portal could simplify access to banking information for younger customers. However, their effectiveness will depend on transparent charges, clear product information and meaningful financial education.
Young customers should understand loan conditions, investment risks and account fees before choosing financial products.
