Cyber Crime
An Open Letter to the New Indian Ambassador to Cambodia
Shri B. Vanlalvawna
Congratulations to you for getting a posting in Cambodia during a really challenging time where entire world is looking at South East Asia for alarming rise in cybercrimes and alleged human trafficking.
I have worked in cybercrime investigation since many years and have cracked hundreds of complex cases. However, one case of 2022 is dear to my heart, where a school teacher earning Rs 15,000/- per month lost Rs 2,00,000/- in a fake investment scheme operating over WhatsApp. Internationally it is known as Pig Butchering Scam. As investigation progressed, and while we tracked complex layering of funds in Indian accounts and post that crypto currency, the scale of entire racket was found to be shocking 4000 Crores. Technical investigation found out links to Cambodia. As per International reports as well, these Cambodia has become a major hub of cybercrime globally.
Owing to geographic limitations & data sharing limitations, we are not able to provide justice to lakhs of victims who are losing crores of their hard earned money. Cases like fake stock trading whatsapp group scam, fake police authority scam, crypto scams are being reported in large scale. Investigations are restricted to only Indian jurisdictions and it turns out that scammers are themselves victims in most cases who are forced to scam from South East Asia.
As you take new charge, it would be my humble request to take up the matter at highest level and prove India’s diplomatic prowess in solving burning global problem which not only is impacting India financially but also risking our Youths to seasoned criminals.
I wish you best luck for your upcoming tenure.
Regards
