Coimbatore | State-owned oil and gas major Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) informed after market hours that a gas leak was detected on January 5, 2026, at Well Mori #5 during workover operations at the Mori Field in Andhra Pradesh. The company said no injuries or loss of life have been reported and the situation is being continuously monitored.
ONGC stated that the well is located in a remote area, with no residential habitation within a 500–600 metre radius. As a precaution, the affected zone has been cordoned off, and cooling operations have been initiated to control temperature and ensure safety.

Crisis management teams deployed
The company said its Crisis Management Team (CMT) and Regional Crisis Management Team (RCMT) have been immediately deployed at the site. Senior management and technical experts are present on the ground and are reviewing the situation on an ongoing basis.
According to ONGC, preparations are in place to control the well and undertake capping operations if required. The company is also coordinating with international well-control specialists to ensure the availability of advanced well-control and casing-cutting operations, should the situation demand.
Additional equipment mobilised
As a precautionary measure, ONGC has mobilised additional equipment from nearby locations, including specialised tools from the Narsapuram area, to support relief and control efforts. The company said safety and environmental safeguards are being strictly adhered to throughout the operation.
ONGC has assured that regular updates will be shared based on developments, so that local authorities, stakeholders and the public are kept accurately informed.

ONGC said the gas leak occurred due to technical reasons during workover activity, and standard safety protocols have been implemented to bring the situation under control. The company reiterated that no major environmental or human impact has been reported so far.
Energy sector experts note that sudden pressure fluctuations during workover operations are a known risk in oil and gas wells. However, timely detection, swift response and appropriate technical measures can prevent escalation. In the present case, experts view ONGC’s initial response as precautionary and in line with established protocols.

The company said the situation is currently under control, but continuous monitoring will continue until the well is fully secured. Additional resources and expert assistance will be deployed if required.
ONGC added that it remains in close coordination with local administration and relevant agencies, and that the safety of personnel, protection of the environment, and security of surrounding areas remain its top priorities.
