New Delhi: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has initiated one of the most significant institutional reforms in its history to enhance the credibility, security and integrity of India’s competitive examination system. Under its “Build New NTA” mission, the agency has begun recruiting senior professionals in critical areas such as cybersecurity, information security, digital forensics, test centre operations and assessment management. The move is widely seen as part of a broader effort to modernise the examination ecosystem following a series of paper leak controversies in recent years.
In an official LinkedIn post, the NTA said the reforms are being implemented based on the recommendations of the High-Level Committee of Experts (HLCE) chaired by Prof. K. Radhakrishnan. According to the agency, it is undergoing the most comprehensive transformation in its history, focusing on academic excellence, technology, security, operational efficiency and governance to ensure a more reliable and transparent examination process for millions of candidates across the country.
As part of the initiative, the NTA has announced recruitment for four senior leadership positions: General Manager (Assessment – Research & Development and Psychometrics), General Manager (Test Centre Network and Operations), Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and General Manager (Vigilance, Investigation and Forensics). These appointments are intended to strengthen examination operations, digital security, question paper confidentiality, cyber resilience and investigative capabilities within the agency.
In addition to these senior roles, the NTA has also invited applications from Young Professionals, particularly candidates who have appeared in the Civil Services Examination. The recruitment includes 12 positions in Academic Research, two positions in Legal Research and two positions in Finance and Accounts Research. The initiative aims to bring fresh talent into policy development, research and long-term examination reforms.
The recruitment drive comes as the Government of India continues to pursue wide-ranging reforms in the national examination system. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently announced the formation of a high-powered task force chaired by Nandan Nilekani to recommend measures for making India’s examination ecosystem more secure, transparent and future-ready. The committee has been tasked with developing recommendations on examination security, digital infrastructure, technological innovation, governance and operational improvements.
According to the Future Crime Research Foundation (FCRF), securing large-scale digital examinations requires more than robust IT infrastructure. It also demands a multi-layered security framework that includes cybersecurity, digital forensics, risk management, continuous monitoring and rapid incident response. The organisation believes that lasting reforms will require both technological advancements and stronger administrative oversight.
Meanwhile, a Researcher at Algoritha Security said that modern examination systems should adopt AI-driven threat detection, network monitoring, digital log analysis, access control mechanisms and continuous security audits to defend against cyberattacks, data breaches and attempts to compromise examination processes. Such technologies can help identify suspicious activities at an early stage and significantly reduce the risk of system manipulation.
Although the current recruitment initiative is not linked to any single incident, it is being viewed as an important institutional step towards restoring public confidence in the country’s examination system and strengthening its resilience against paper leaks and cyber threats. Experts believe that combining advanced technology, specialised cybersecurity expertise, transparent governance and effective monitoring can significantly improve the credibility and fairness of India’s major competitive examinations in the years ahead.
