NCW Unveils Digital Shakti Center to Address Cyber Crimes Against Women
The National Commission for Women (NCW) inaugurated the Digital Shakti Center on Monday to tackle cyber crimes targeting women.
According to the NCW, the Digital Shakti Center is a specialized facility designed to raise awareness about cyber crimes affecting women and provide crucial technical support for filing and resolving complaints.
“With the troubling increase in cyber crimes such as identity theft, cyber stalking, and online sexual exploitation, this initiative is essential for empowering women to protect themselves in the digital realm,” the NCW stated. The center will offer expert assistance to ensure prompt and effective handling of cyber crime reports, building on the success of the Digital Shakti campaign launched by the NCW in 2018.
“This campaign has successfully reached millions of women, providing them with the knowledge and resources needed to secure their digital environments,” the commission added.
During the inauguration, the NCW chairperson noted a significant rise in cyber crime cases in India, with incidents increasing from 52,974 in 2021 to 65,893 in 2022. The NCW has also seen a rise in complaints related to cyber crimes against women.
“In 2023, the Commission recorded 608 complaints, which made up 2.2% of all complaints. As of August 1, 2024, 386 complaints have been filed, representing 2.5% of the total,” she reported.
Acknowledging the urgent need for action, the NCW launched the Digital Shakti campaign in June 2018 to educate women about reporting mechanisms, data privacy, and the use of technology to their advantage.
“The campaign has reached 686,000 people through direct sessions and over 26.7 million individuals online. Building on this progress, the NCW is now introducing the fifth phase of the Digital Shakti initiative,” she concluded.
