In a major achievement in India’s ongoing war against narcotics, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has successfully secured the conviction of 219 drug traffickers across 103 NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) cases this year. The milestone underscores the agency’s consistent efforts to dismantle drug supply chains and ensure stringent legal action against offenders nationwide.

According to NCB officials, the agency’s strategy now extends beyond enforcement to ensuring successful prosecution and higher conviction rates, aimed at protecting society from the growing menace of narcotics.

Major Conviction in Heroin Seizure Case Near Indo-Pak Border

In a recent breakthrough, the NCB Chandigarh Zone achieved a key conviction in a 2021 heroin seizure case from the Indo-Pakistan border area.
A Special NDPS Court in Fazilka found Gurpreet Singh guilty and sentenced him to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹1.5 lakh. The case involved the recovery of over 5.9 kilograms of heroin from the border zone, linked to cross-border trafficking networks.

Barabanki Court Awards 10-Year Jail Term in Charas Case

In another significant judgment, a Special NDPS Court in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, sentenced Azad, a convicted drug trafficker, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh for the possession and trafficking of 2.7 kilograms of charas in 2022.

Our goal is not just arrests, but convictions,” says NCB official

An NCB spokesperson emphasized the agency’s commitment to ensuring justice through effective legal follow-up:

“Our aim is not merely to arrest traffickers but to ensure they face the full force of the law. Convictions serve as a strong deterrent and help weaken the drug network at its core.”

Stronger Prosecution, Coordinated Enforcement

Over the past few years, NCB has enhanced the quality of investigation and prosecution through tighter coordination with state police forces and improved forensic support. Officials say the Bureau’s current focus lies in raising conviction rates, analyzing cross-border linkages, and strengthening inter-agency cooperation to disrupt organized narcotics trade across India.
