The South Mumbai District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has issued notices to global luxury brand Gucci and its outlets in Mumbai in connection with a consumer complaint filed by Advocate Ali Kaashif Khan Deshmukh. The lawyer has alleged that a pair of Gucci shoes worth ₹75,500 purchased from the brand’s outlet on March 6, 2024, was defective and caused him physical discomfort and public embarrassment.

A bench comprising President Sadik Ali B Sayyad and Member Gauri M Kapse has directed notices to Guccio Gucci S.p.A. (Italy), and the brand’s Mumbai outlets at Trident Hotel and Jio World Plaza. The case has been admitted under the Consumer Protection Act, and a formal hearing will follow.

Complaint Alleges Defective Footwear and Poor Customer Handling

Deshmukh’s plea outlines that within just an hour of wearing the newly purchased shoes, he experienced instability and discomfort due to uneven soles. He reportedly stumbled in public and suffered pain and embarrassment due to the disparity in elevation between the two shoes. He promptly returned to the store but was allegedly redirected and faced dismissive treatment by staff at the Bandra Kurla Complex outlet.

A written acknowledgment from Gucci, dated March 7, confirmed the elevation difference in the shoes. However, the complainant claims the brand failed to provide a meaningful resolution. He ended up purchasing another pair for ₹9,500 but says the emotional damage had already been done.

₹1.14 Crore Compensation Sought for Physical and Emotional Trauma

The complaint accuses Gucci of selling defective goods, negligence in quality control, and adopting unfair trade practices. Deshmukh claims he suffered not only physical injury but also significant mental trauma, humiliation, and a loss of public confidence. He argues that the brand’s failure to uphold the standard of service expected from an international luxury label led to “avoidable agony.”

The advocate has sought a total compensation of ₹1.14 crore—comprising general and special damages—for mental distress, wasted time, public humiliation, and litigation costs. The consumer forum is expected to hear Gucci’s response in due course.
